Wm Wilkinson and James Wilson of CC, Gent, or either of them, pursuant to an act of Assembly of Maryland for the encouragement of such persons as would undertake to build water mills, [on] Oct 30, 1731, have purchased out of our High Court of Chancery within Maryland, our writ of Ad Quod Damnium directed to our CC Sheriff, commanding him that, by the oaths of 12 honest men of CC, he should inquire if it would be to the damage of us or others if we should grant sd Wm Wilkinson & James Wilson or either of them, 20 acres at Swanson's Cr in CC, viz, 10 acres on one side of such run, & 10 acres on the other side of such run, with liberty to cut down and carry away, either by land or water, any wood or timber fit for building a mill, other than timber fit to split into clapboards upon any land next adjoining to the sd 20 acres. The afd Sher., has, at the request of sd William Wilkinson, returned into our Court a certain inquisition, before him taken at Swanson Cr in Benedict Hundred in CC on Dec 14, 1732 by the oath of 12 honest men of CC, whereby it appears to have been found that 10 acres of the land lying on the north side of the main Southwardly Branch of the Cr commonly called Cabbin Branch, being part of a tract of land in CC containing about 300 acres, called Trumans Place now said to be the right of Edward Carleton but in the possession of the above sd Wm Wilkinson, are of the yearly value of 3 shillings, and that 10 acres of land lying on the sot. h side of the main Southwardly branch afd, being part of Calverton Mannor containing about 6000 acres now said to be our right but in the possession of Wm Lawson of CC, of the yearly value of 4 shillings. Know that we are pleased to grant and by these presents do grant unto sd Wm Wilkinson, sd 20 acres to build a water mill upon, together with free egress and regress to sd water mill, with liberty to cut down and carry away, any timber fit for building sd water mill other than board timber fit to cleave or split into clapboards. To have and to hold, for the term of 80 years, paying 7 shillings yearly, of which 3 shillings goes to sd Edward Carleton, and 4 shillings goes to us and our successors, upon Mar 9. Witness our trusty Samuel Ogle, Esq, Governor of Maryland, this Mar 9, 1731 - J Ross Reg: Cur Cant.

Priscilla Gray, born say 1708, was a "malatto" servant of Mrs. Sarah Magruder, Sr., of Prince George's County in November 1727 when she confessed to the court that she had an illegitimate child by a "negroe." On 23 March 1730/1 the court presented her for having another child by information of the constable for Mount Calvert Hundred. She admitted her guilt, and the court ordered that she receive five lashes and serve her mistress an additional nine months. The court called her "Priscilla Gray alias Malatto Priscilla" when it bound her son Dick, aged about three months, to Lingan Wilson until the age of twenty-one. In November 1732 she was called a "Mollatto Woman born of a white Woman" when she confessed to having a child by "Malatto George belonging to Mr. William Digges." The Court ordered her to serve an additional seven years and bound her son William for thirty-one years. She was presented for the same offense in March 1735, and on 28 November 1738 the court bound her "Mallatto" son Joseph, born 9 August 1738, to her master, William Magruder, until the age of thirty-one. She may have had a common-law marriage with a member of the Grimes family since she was called "Priscilla Grimes Als Gray" on 26 November 1745 when she confessed to having an illegitimate child named Kate who was bound to William Magruder until the age of thirty-one. On 27 November 1750 she confessed to "Mollatto Bastardy," and the court ordered that she serve seven years and bound her daughter Anne to William Magruder until the age of thirty-one [Court Records 1726-7, 626; 1730-2, 2, 5; 1732-4, 118; 1734-5, 357; 1738-40, 199; 1744-6, 298-9; 1749-50, 244].
