      Newman and his wife acknowledged the following to Mr. Francis Pope in open court: Indenture; 4 Aug 1665; from George Newman, planter, to Francis Pope, planter; for 3800# of tobacco, a parcel of land lying on the cast side of the Patomac River adjoining land of Richard Watson, planter; containing 350 acres taken up by Wm. Batten, dec'd, and formerly in possession of Francis Pope; /s/ George Newman, Sr., Lidia Numan (mark); wit. Abraham Rouse, Jacob Jans, Thomas Wentworth acknowledged conveyance of land to Daniell Mathenya:

      Editors: Lydia (Ashcomb) Newman was not the daughter, but the step-daughter of William Battin, who on 1 Jan 1652 "demanded from His Lordship 650 acres of land for the transportation of himself, his wife Margarey, his wife's daughter Lydia Ashcomb, his servants George Newman, Richard ----, and Susannah ----, and a servant Robert Joyce whom he had purchased from Robert Brooke and for whom he was to have 50 acres of land." After his death, his widow Margery married John Bowles, but died shortly thereafter. Jane Battin, sister of William, married Thomas Smoot, son of William "the Boatright."
