      GEORGE GILPIN; (lead off man on the right side of the coffin) Was a revolutionary soldier and officer, and from early in the year 1809 until the 27th of December 1813 was Postmaster of Alexandria, having succeded George Washington Craik Esq. in that office By appointment of the lodge, Col. Gilpin was one of Washington's pall-bearers and was present in the lodge when Washington's death was announced and the arrangements were made for his internment. Col. Gilpin died in Alexandria, December 27, 1813 and was buried with Masonic Honors. Of the six members of the group we find very little written, and nothing of his family of Benjamin Dulany and Cyrus Copper , recorded.

      This Indenture made this seventeenth day of October 1775 Between MICHAEL THORN of
      Town of Alexandria and County of Fairfax Tinner of one part and MESSRS. HARPER and HARTSHORNE of same place Merchants of other part Witnesseth that for sum two hundred
      pounds lawfull money of Virginia Michael Thorn hath granted and to farm let all that part of GI LP INS WHARF in Town aforesaid which by a Lease from GEORGE GILPIN bearing date the Twenty second day of April 1775 was granted to the said Thorn for term of ten years subject to an annual rent of seventeen pounds payable to George Gilpin on 22d day April in every year To have and to hold during and unto the expiration of the term for which it was granted by the afsd Lease Provided always that if Michael Thorn shall pay the said Harper and Hartshorne the Just sum of two hundred pounds with lawful interest from the date of these presents within one year every clause herein contained shall cease and be utterly void .
