SMOOT, JAMES. James Smoot, probable son of Cuthbert Smoot, was
born in St. Mary's County, Maryland in the 1760's. He followed
his kinsmen to Culpeper County, Virginia On December 18, 1797,
he conveyed all his property to Biscoe Smith and then went to
Rowan County, North Carolina. There he purchased land on Bear
Creek. He married Jemima ---- and their children were: Mary Smoot
(married Gassaway Gaither); Elizabeth Smoot (married Walter
Gaither); Margaret Smoot (married an Anderson); Henrietta Smoot
(married a Lyons); Brittania Smoot (married a Sloan); Thomas B.
Smoot; and, Eleanor Smoot (married an Anderson). James Smoot died
testate in 1837 in Davie County, North Carolina (Ref: The Smoots
of Maryland and Virginia, by Harry Wright Newman, pages 149-150
