After her death, her third part is to be divided between the children of her body.
To my 2 sons, Charles and Henry Gill - after my wife's death, I want the afd land and improvements sold and the purchase money equally divided between them.
To my 3 daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Elenor Lyons - 20 £less than the rest of my children which are now with me, out of my estate, they having recd the value thereof. Negro boy Ben, which I lent to my daughter, Mary Lyon and which is now in her possession, is to be appraised with the rest of my estate, she having liberty to keep sd Negro on paying to my estate the balance of his value, if any, over her part, with the rest of my younger children.

Jerrilyn, just had to respond with info that I obtained in 1993 from a lady (who was 100yrs of age) re a SANFORD CARTER of Stafford Co.,VA. She said," My ancestor, Sanford Carter was forn in Stafford Co.,VA in 1785. He married Hannah READE(REED,etc) and has four children. James who had no children, but an adopted daughter, Mary who married a man named HOLMES and has/had? nine children,(here it gets confusing...)William Frister (my ancestor) and Elizabeth who never married.(*3children?) William Frister (we called Frister)went to Ohio & married Charlotte Smith & died of pneumonia at age 39. Sanford paid taxes in both Stafford and Prince William Counties in Virginia. I have seen his grave stone and that of his wife oh his plantation near Ruby,VA."

Stafford County History:
Loyal Carter (died c.1847)—Several of his children are buried in the Carter cemetery. During the War of 1812 Loyal served with the 45th Virginia militia. He was granted retail licenses 1825 and 1827 and possibly other years as well. In 1820, 1822, and 1823 Loyal was granted licenses to keep an ordinary. In 1824 he was brought before the Stafford Court for retailing Spiritous liquors at his house in Aquia to be drank when sold without a license for doing so. His very modest estate was inventoried in 1847 and included one clock and case, 1 brass kettle, "1 decanter salt cellar & pepper box,” a few pieces of household and kitchen furniture, and 1 cow and calf. His wife’s maiden name is unknown at this time.

William Carter (1730-1761) was the son of James Carter (1697-1743) and Mary Brent. He was very likely the father of Loyal Carter (died c.1847). [We know, of course, that Will was d.s.p.] William owned 140 of the 240 acres that became Palace Green. Immediately after his death, his property was sold to satisfy a bond. That may be why he was buried in James Carter’s cemetery.

John Lewgar Wright was the son of William Wright, the son of Thomas, wife Mary Booker, the son of John and John. The line I have not been able to document is the wife of John L. Wright, Margaret Reeder or Robins. It has never been proven. A book written many years ago said her name was either Reeder or Robins. I have searched both lines but never found a will of a daughter Margaret Reeder, Robins or Wright. The closest I came was Richard Reeder who named a daughter Margaret Davis, ? a first marriage ?, could not connect to that either. Thanks for any information there. MarieK

Samuel Baker was attached to answer Jno. Suttle of a plea why hee by force and arms &c into and upon a certain messuage plantation and tract of land the freehold of said John scituate on Nomony containing 154 acres hath unlawfully entered. John complains that whereas Wm. Strather late of the county aforesaid being in his lifetyme seized of 154 acres as by deed of sale from Majr. Thomas Youell to him dated 25 March 1691 may appeare, and Wm. dying without issue the land descended to Mary the sister and sole heire of Wm., and John haveing intermarried with Mary who is now liveing John became seized in the freehold of the land. Nevertheless, Samll. hath upon the land by force of arms unlawfully entered and doth detaine and keep to the damage of John 20,000 pounds of tobacco.
The defendant by Willoughby Allerton his attorney saith that the declaration is for the most part false, untrue and insufficient in law. The defendant saith that true it is that Wm. Stradder of Nominy was in his life tyme seized of 154 acres and Wm, died without issue, having no other kindred than Mary, sister of the half blood, with whom the complainant hath intermarried. And whereas the complainant hath declared Mary to bee sister and sole heire of Straddor, the defendant doth avers to be false for by the common law none can bee heir to a fee simple but hee that hath sanguinem duplicatum and consequently Mary, being but sister of the half blood to Straddor can bee no heir to him. And whereas Straddor died without issue and having no other relation than Mary, the lands were falen into the hands of the Lord of the Fee as escheat lands by vertue of which the defendant hath entered an escheat in the office of the said Lord, notwithstanding the complainant to trouble and vex the defendant hath brought this action to the damage of the defendant 12,000 pounds of tobacco, for which he prays judgment. And for that the plaintiff would not further prosecute, upon the motion of the defendant by his attorney a nonsuite is granted him.

The Marshall & Bradshaw Families of Southside Virginia," by K. Marshall Cook, pub. 1979

The Marshall/Bradshaw book was written by K.Marshall Cook who was once Attorney General for the state of Va. Apparently after writing it he experienced "burnout" like so many genealogists do . I discovered it quite by accident while researching in Rice Va. The post office sent me to his mother's house and she showed it to me . At that time there were no copies left and she generously let me take her copy and have it copied . It took me back six generations ! The charts (all hand drawn) are wonderful . His address is K.Marshall Cook, Sunnyside, 2412 Hampden Row , Rockville, Virginia 23146. 804-749-4295. If he doesn't have copies available and it is all right with him I will copy it for you . Mrs. Clara Lorene [Cammack] Park and her husband Wilbur Goolsby Park, Sr. wrote a book Francis Moody 1769-1821 His Ancestors, Descendants and Related Families, 1984. I do not know if there are any books left. Their address a few years ago:3212 Kirkcaldy, El Paso, TX 79925.
Posted by Gordon and Dolores Miltenberger on August 01, 1998 genforum

Their book has everything there is about Alexander Marshall and Elizabeth Worsham who were ancestors of Francis Moody. Also has the descendants of Alexander and Elizabeth - wonderful book - well indexed and well referenced. There is a picture of the graves of Alexander and Elizabeth.

Alexander Marshall was born in 1676 at VA and lived in a section of Henrico County, Virginia which later became Chesterfield County. He was a tanner by trade and from his many land purchases in later life, it appears that he became a farmer and a man of means.

Alexander's wife, Elizabeth Worsham, was the widow of Thomas Ligon. The inventory of the estate of Thomas Ligon was filed on May 7, 1705. On August 20, 1706 a proceeding of Orphans Court of Henrico stated that "Alexander Marshall, who lately married Mrs. Elizabeth Ligon" was given custody of Lodowick Tanner. Elizabeth was the daughter of Capt. John and Phoebe Worsham. She is mentioned as "my daughter, Elizabeth Marshall" in Capt. Worsham's will in 1729. Alexander and Elizabeth had four children.

Alexander and Elizabeth made their home at the residence she had shared with her late husband. Two of her daughters by Ligon, Phebe and Elizabeth, received a parcel of land known as "Powell's" from their father's estate. Alexander purchased 86 acres of this tract in 1725 from Phebe and her husband Henry Walthall. In 1733 he bought another 100 acres, which was probably the remainder of "Powell's," from Elizabeth and her husband James Anderson.

On January 7, 1725 Alexander patented 2000 acres of land on the north side of Appomattox river and the south side of Butterwood Creek. This tract was part of the formation of Goochland County in 1728. Alexander patented 3000 acres in Goochland on September 28, 1730. This included the acreage of his former patent. http://image.vtls.com/collections/land.office.html

The discovery of family relationships is often possible through wills and records of birth and baptisms. Sometimes, in the absence of a will, land records may be helpful. Alexander left a will which was probated in Henrico County, but no copy survives. However, there are some land records which are revealing.

In 1738 Alexander Marshall sold six hundred acres to George Williamson who choose not to have the land registered. Alexander died in 1743, leaving his will. When George Williamson died in 1752, the court ordered that his land be surveyed. It was then discovered that Williamson never received forty acres of the land he bought from Marshall. The court determined that William Marshall, Francis Marshall, and John Todd were now enjoying the use of this land, and ordered in 1769 that these three pay 39 pounds to the grandson of George Williamson for the forty acres.

" Mr. Alexander Marshall received large grants of land in Henrico County. Marshall bought from Michell Mitchell his rights to a survey of 628 acres in Henrico County and applied to the Land Office for a patent. On 1 April 1717 the Land Office issued the patent in the name of Mitchell, who had been dead a long time, and not in the name of Alexander Marshall. Marshall discovered the error and obtained a corrected patent in 1721. Alexander Marshall was a processioner in Bristol Parish 1723-24. The Bristol Parish vestry appointed Matthew Ligon and Alexander Marshall tobacco counters from Swift Creek to the lower bounds of the parish 29 June 1724 and again 28 June 1725. An Act of Assembly mandated the appointment of "men of Experience and dignity for Careful Viewing of each man’s crop of Tobacco.” The purpose of counting tobacco was to hold down production and prop up prices. On 7 January 1725/6 he secured a patent for 2,000 acres in the north side of Appomattox River, and on the south side of Butterwood Creek. This land fell later in Goochland. On 28 September 1730, he renewed his patent of 2,000 acres and obtained a patent on 1,000 additional acres. The Land Office issued a patent on another huge tract of 1,950 acres in 1731. Marshall sold 2,250 acres on both sides of Swift Creek, called the "Great Swamp,” to Thomas Friend in 1733. To George Williamson Alexander sold 600 acres of his 1725-patent in 1738. Henrico County taxed Marshall on six levies and 444 acres in 1736. Alexander and William Marshall presented their father’s now-lost will July 1743. Alexander and his wife were buried on the left bank of the Appomattox River near its mouth, upon a highland that belonged to Richard Epes. A double headstone still stands there with the following inscription, 'Here lyeth the Body of Mr. Alexander Marshall who departed this life May 3rd. 1743, Aged 67 years. Here lyeth the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall who departed this life Feb. 1743/44 Aged 67 years.' "

Military Service: 1776 Pvt. in Capt. Francis Mastin's County, Charles County, Maryland
Residence: BET. 1754 - MAY 1791 Charles Co. Maryland
===

There is a very tiny Norris family in the records of Charles Co. from about 1754 onward. They descend from Daniel Norris (c.1690-1756) who is found frequently in SMC between 1712 and 1740. Daniel disappears for a while after 1740, probably living in Stafford Co. Va. with his son, John Norris.
They re-appear in Charles Co. where Daniel died in 1756. I'm almost certain that they lived on rented land in St. Thomas Manor, and were associated with St. Ignatius Church. I descend from William Norris (c.1745-1803) probably a grandson of Daniel, but not proved.

William appears around Nanjemoy in the lower part of Durham Parish. He is strongly associated with the Posey, Maddox, Bowie, Manning, and Robertson families in that area.

About the time William passed the final account for Humphrey Posey Sr. in 1790, he was preparing to move to Abbeville Dist. SC. I think this is why Wheeler Posey was given a new Guardian. William is in Abbeville by 1791 with Walter Manning (of John, of John) earlier of Chas. Co. In 1803, Walter
Manning was appointed Executor of William Norris' Will. Among the purchasers at the estate sale was Robert Posey, son of Benjamin Posey (d.1797) of Abbeville.

As your database shows, Jennet Luckett, dau. of Ignatius, m. (1st) Pryor Posey, son of Humphrey Sr. She married (2nd) Hendley Maddox, the security for Wheeler Posey's 1790 Guardian Bond. Jennet and her children also eventually moved to Abbeville. When she died in 1818, her Will was witnessed by William Norris Jr. (son of William, Admr. of Humphrey Posey).

from Steve's website --
By 1776, William Norris Sr. was living in Charles Co. Maryland where served as a Private, Capt. Francis Mastin’s County, 26th Bttn., Charles County Militia. He served from 19 March 1776 through at least 1777 (Md. MSS. Rec. Vol. 5, Page 68; Vol. ii, Page 285, Md. Hist. Soc.). Most of the men in this Militia Co. were residing in the lower part of Durham Parish at the time. In 1778, he signed the Oath of Allegiance (Chas. Co. Court Proceedings, X3, Page 641-651, which shows his name as "Norrice"). William next appears on the 1783 tax list of Charles Co. Maryland, in the 7th District, with a 200 acre tract. This record places him in the lower part of Durham Parish again, near the town of Nanjemoy. Because his land was taxed as personal property (not real estate), we know it was located somewhere outside the county. Lastly, William Norris pledged funds to support the Minister of Durham Parish in 1791 (Painter, Rev. William C., "History of Durham Parish" (copyright 1894), Page 16). Probably anticipating his move to South Carolina, he was among a very few parishoners that did not pledge funds to repair and enlarge the parish church that year.

William Norris Sr. moved from Charles County, Maryland. to Abbeville Dist. SC about 1791, and owned 100 acres on Turkey Creek, waters of Saluda River. He apparently came to South Carolina with Walter Manning who had recently sold his land in Charles Co. (Charles Co. Deeds, K4.9). They settled between the towns of Due West and Donalds in Abbeville, near many others from Charles County, including the Robertson, Bowie, Posey, and Maddox families. Deed records for Abbeville Dist. SC during this period are burned, but William's land ownership in Abbeville is known from his Will (see below) and SC state plats for his son, Hezekiah Norris.

The William Norris shown in Maryland revolutionary records can be firmly identified as the same person later living in Abbeville Dist. SC by his distinctive signature mark. Clues have been found that suggest he was already living in Abbeville when the 1790 census was completed in May 1791. That census shows Wm. "Morris" was living on Turkey Creek in Abbeville adjacent to William Robertson, earlier of Charles Co. Maryland. No further records of this "Morris" have been found. Two years later, in 1793, Robertson surveyed a 220 acre tract on Turkey Creek that adjoined John Cullins (SC plats, v. 33, Page 244). By 1800, the census shows William Norris Sr. was now living between Robertson and Cullins, and Wm. "Morris" shown in the earlier census is missing.

Linda Reno says
Capt. Randolph Brandt, Deputy Survey for Charles Co, transported 6 unnamed persons before Sept 1680 (Settlers of Charles Co, Coldham.) See this reference for further information on property owned.
10/12/1685: Deed of gift from Randolph Brandt and his wife Mary to their son-in-law, Joseph Bullett and their daughter, Elizabeth "Thomas Town", 200 ac. (Early Settlers of Charles County, Bates). Elizabeth Brandt Bullett left a will in Charles Co. dated 1/12/1693-3/14/1693-4.
8/29/1700: Letter from Randolph Brandt, eldest son of Capt. Randolph Brant in which he stated he was leaving for the island of Barbadoes to receive the estate left him by his brother Marcus Brandt. He also mentioned that his uncle, Jacob Brandt died leaving a widow and a grown daughter whom he was assisting. (Early Settlers of Charles County, Bates). Yes, I know there's a problem with the date-the letter really must be 8/29/1705 as Marcus Brandt's will was dated 7/23/1705. Randolph Jr. left a will dated 12/12/1711-5/26/1716.
Capt. Randolph Brandt had a brother named Jacob Brandt, b. bef 1650 and died bef 1699. Jacob had a son named Charles Brandt. The admin. accts. of Capt. Randolph Brandt in 1699 include a legacy to the son Charles and stated that Jacob was deceased by that time.

It appears, according to Skordas, p55, 56, that Randolph Brandt, his wife Mary, and his daughers Judith and Mary came into the MD colony in 1674.
