Old Rappahannock or Lancaster County, Virginia.
On 10 April 1657, a marriage agreement was discovered between Captain Thomas Lucas, the Elder of Rappahannock in Virginia, Gentleman, Col. More Fantleroy and Captain William Underwood of the county aforesaid on - - in consideration of a marriage (God Willing) shortly to be solemnized between the said Thomas Lucas and Margaret Upton. The bond for the marriage was for the sum of 12,000 pounds of tobacco to be executed by Col. More Fantleroy and William Underwood.

THIS INDENTURE made the 10th day of April! in the year of our Lord (missing) Between THOMAS LUCAS the Elder of the County of Rappahannock in Virginia Gent on the one part and Coll. MORE FANTLEROY & Capt. WILLIAM UNDERWOOD of the County aforesd on the other part Witnesseth that for & in consideration ofa MARRIAGE (God Willing) shortly to be had & solemnized between said THOMAS LUCAS & MARGARET UPTON late Wife of Capt. JOHN UPTON Deced (missing) MAGARETT & in Testimony of the Singular good will (& affection which he the said THOMAS LUCAS SENR) hath & beareth to the said MARGARETT & by these (missing) that all & Singular the Estate of & (missing) wearing apparell Utincells & Catle (missing) shall & may. be at her the said MARGARETTs (missing) Disposeing bequeathing or otherwise bestowing by her last Will & Testament (missing) decea se But if the sd MARGARET UPTON shall happen to Survive (missing) himself his heirs Exrs. & Admrs, & assignes (missing) the said
Coll. MORE FANTLEROY & Capt. WM. UNDERWOOD or either of them & the (missing) Exrs. and Admrs. of them that all Estate abovemenconed shall return to her the said MARGARETT UPTON & to her only use and behoof & further it is covenanted granted concluded & agreed upon by & between the said partys their heirs Exts. & Admrs. that what Servants the said MARGARET UPTON shall from & after the said Marriage so had & solemnized bring & deliver into the Custody of the said THOMAS LUCAS the said THOMAS LUCAS doth for himself his heirs Exrs. Admrs. & assignes covenant & agree to redeliver & return back to her the said MARGARETT UPTON her heirs Exrs. & Admrs. to their proper use and behoof as many Servants in kind so received by him the said THOMAS LUCAS (missing) likewise that if a negro Servant belonging to the Estate of said MARGARETT UPTON dye then the said THOMAS LUCAS doth hereby ingage himself his heirs Exrs. & Admrs to put in his Stead an able (bodied Servant) that hath four years to Serve at least & also that what Crop of Tobacco shall (be made this present) year by the Servants of the said MARGARETT UPTON may be by her disposed of (missing) & further it is covenanted & agreed upon by the partys abovesd that the said MARGARETT UPTON from & after the decease of the said THOMAS LUCAS during (widowhood) her choice to hold & quietly (missing) any of the houses upon the Plantacon of the said THOMAS LUCAS to live in as also Sufficient (missing) the aforesaid Plantacon as two men Servants can (missing) & maner provided always (missing) choyce do not predjudice the SONNs of the said THOMAS LUCAS upon that part of the said Plantacon whereon they shall be Seated and further it is covenanted concluded & agreed upon that if the said MARGARETT UPTON do Survive & overlive the said THOMAS LUCAS then she doth freely & willingly (accept the) premises in lieu of her thirds out of the said THOMAS LUCAS his Estate & further it is covenanted & agreed upon that what debts shall be (brought) by any person or persons (missing) the Estate of Capt. JOHN UPTON (missing) Exacted out of
the Estate (missing) but that the Estate of said THOMAS LUCAS shall be not be lyable or responsable therefor. IN WITNESS whereof ye partys aforesaid have hereunto sett their hands & seals the day & year first above written

KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I THOMAS LUCAS SENR. of the County of Rappa. in Virginia gent. do acknowledge myself to owe (& stand indebted unto Coll. MORE FANTLEROY & Capt. WM.) UNDERWOOD of the County aforesaid in the just & full quantity of Twenty thousand pounds of good merchantable Tobacca & Cask to be paid to them their heirs Ears, Admrs. & assignes upon demand for which payment well & truly to be made I bind myself my heirs & assignes firmly by these presents sealed with my seal dated (missing) The Condition or this Obligation (is such that Whereas a MARRIAGE is shortly to be had &) Solemnized between the above named (missing) the abovesaid WILL UNDERWOOD and Whereas the said THOMAS LUCAS hath by a Deed of even date with these presents made a joynture unto the said MARGARET UPTON (missing) agreed to & with the said Coll. MORE FANTLEROY & Capt, WILLIAM UNDERWOOD (missing) to perform all & Singular the conditions & agreemts. in the aforesaid Deed expressed and Limiued if therefore the said Coll. MORE FANTLEROY & Capt. WILLIAM UNDERWOOD their heirs Exrs. Admrs. & assignes shall & may quietly & peaceably enjoy all the moveables cattell & chattels by the said Deed made over to them according to the prem(missing) without the molestation or disturbance of the said THOMAS LUCAS or any claiming under him that then this present obligacon to be void & of none effect or else to remain in full force & Virtue
