  • Notes
    • Joseph Bell Kent, son of William and Sarah (Perrin) Kent, was born in Paxton Township, Ross County, Ohio on February 14, 1806. On October 27, 1829, he married Elizabeth Staley, who was born in Boutetourt County, Va., in 1809.
About a year after their marriage they moved to Pike Township, Warren County, Indiana, not many miles from where his brother Perrin and family had settled in 1826. The family remained in Warren County for several years and then after a short sojourn in Vermilion County, Illinois, went to Buchanan County Missouri. After the death of his first wife Elizabeth which occurred on August 18, 1844 in Buchanan, Missouri. (Elizabeth is my great great grandmother. Last September Sheldon and I went to Buchanan, Missouri, we could not find where she was buried. We did find a mention in a book by her son, that she died in Ohio. But that is the only time I have seen that written. They could have buried her on the farm and the church records often went with the ministers in the early days. Joseph and the children returned to Ross County, Ohio, and there the following year he married Anna Evans, she was born August 29, 1825 in Ross County, Ohio. She died August 8, 1907, in Salina, Saline County, Kansas. Joseph and Anna remained in Ross County, Ohio, until after the birth of their first child, then with his wife and five children again went to Missouri. Four of the children were with his first wife Elizabeth of whom is our blood line. It is said that on this trip Joseph in addition to his family, only an old cart, an old gray mare, and five dollars in gold. Shortly after reaching St. Joseph, Mo. he acquired a farm in the Platte Purchase, in what is now Andew County, where he continued to reside until his death November 14, 1889. Joseph Bell Kent, is buried in the Bedford Chapel Cemetery, near Savannah, Missouri. Sheldon and I visited the Cemetery in September, 1992, the church is gone and the cemetery is in need of repair. It is northeast of Savannah, you take the last blacktop on the north edge of town, there is a gas station and coop there and go east about two miles, to a dead end. Make left, north, and follow the the black top, right at the end of a curve is a dirt road, go left, it is about 3 or 4 miles. The cemetery is on the north west corner very small, almost on top of a hill. We walked right to Joseph stone, it stands very tall.[marshall4.FTW]
