  • Notes
    • It is believed that Joseph Kent, was about a year old, he he came with his parents to America. It seems probable that the family lived in Fairfax County, Virginia, ant that they later moved to Old Town, Maryland. Joseph was living in Washington County, Pennsylvania when the 1790 Federal census was taken, and at that time his family consisted on one male over sixteen years, one under sixteen and three females. Which we believe to be Joseph, his wife and three children. On April 13, 1802, Joseph Kent and Anne his wife, deeded to Thomas Allison a parcel of land in Washington County, Pa., containing 66 acres and being of a tract of land called Perrinsfield, granted to William Perrin for himself and in trust for the other heirs of Edward Perrin, deceased. So from this we can ascertain that Anne was was a Perrin before her marriage to Zachariah Rankin (deceased), then marrying Joseph Kent.
In a deed dated March 13, 1807, Joseph Kent and his wife Ann, then residing in Jefferson County, Ohio, executed a deed for land in Washington County, Pa. "Whereas, Zachariah Rankin (deceased) late of Smith Township, Washington county Pa., in his last will and testament, did bequeath his land to his only child, Abby Rankin, subject to his wife's dower, and whereas Joseph Kent is married unto Ann, the widow and relict of the said Zachariah Rankin, deceased", they Joseph Kent and Anne his wife, of Jefferson County, Ohio, in consideration of $100.00 "paid by Issac Wood, the husband of the aforesaid Abby" and $100.00 to be paid in 5 years, quit claim all rights, etc., to John McCalmont of Washington County, Penna. in land of Zachariah Rankin.
Zachariah Rankin ( a son of William Rankin), who went to Washington County in the fall of 1773) took up a tract of land near his father's. It was surveyed in 1785 as "Black Oak Ridge", and contained 337 acres and was located on Raccoon Creek. In October following, he was bitten by a mad wolf and died three months later of hydrophobia. He was married and ha a daughter. She was born after his death. She inherited the property and became the wife of Isaac Woodl (History of Washington County.)
Joseph Kent, lived a very long life, having died in 1856, at the age of 106.
Anne was the widow of Zachariah Rankin. We do not know her maiden name.
