Notes - === Research Notes from David Cissell
For John Cissell there is no evidence ,that I know of, as to what his wife's madden name was. Similarly there are no records to indicate that he had a second wife. Linda Reno's notes under Mary Shircliffe suggest that she may have married 1st Peter Mills and secondly Thomas Dant [and so not John Cissell]
As part of our DNA testing efforts, we have looked for matches with Shircliffe descendants and have found none.

After much gnashing of teeth, etc., this morning, I have come to the conclusion that Mary Shercliffe, daughter of John Shercliffe and Anne Spink was married twice. She married first, Peter Mills and second, Thomas Dant.
Colonial Settlers of St. Clement's Bay by Mary Louise Donnelly says Mary
Shercliffe married second, John Dent. She also states that she was the
daughter of Anne Goldsborough--the only wife of John Shercliffe and that
the only way that Henry Spink would have been her uncle was if he had
married a sister of John Shercliffe or Anne Goldsborough before he came
to MD. She's wrong, wrong, wrong. Henry Spink was her uncle because her
mother was his sister, Anne Spink. She did not marry John Dent or Dant,
she married Thomas Dant.
I had married Mary Shercliffe off to John Cissell (d. 1698) because she
was listed in the 1707 rent rolls as owning 25 ac. "Poplar Neck" along
with the sons of John Cissell. John Cissell's wife was named Mary, but
I just don't think she could have been Mary Shercliffe as she had to
have been married to Thomas Dant by 1688 and she was still Mary Dant in
1707 and in 1712.
Here's the reasoning:
2/22/1675: Thomas Dant, Peter Peake, and William Didoll witnessed the
will of Edward Clarke, SMC.
9/23/1680: Thomas Dant, St. Mary's Co.: "Peterborough", 100 ac.,
9/23/1680 (including land for time of service of Thomas Coverdale of
SMC)--Settlers of MD, Coldham.
Will of Peter Mills, SMC 9/3/1684-3/17/1684-85. Wife: Mary (Exec.) home
plantation. Daughter: Elizabeth, sd. plantation at death of wife.
Sons: Nicholas and Peter 64 ac. "Minsterdam" and 150 ac. "Pomfret
Field". To: Peter and William Howard sd. estate in event of death of
wife and three children afsd. without issue. Wit: Clement Hill, Thomas
Dant, John Barnard, Elizabeth Cooke.
3/18/1685: Admin. accts. of Peter Mills, SMC. Appraisers: Henry Spink
and Richard Walker. Approvers: Thomas Dant and Arthur Thompson
(Skinner).
Admin. accts. of Peter Mills 4/9/1688; Adm., Thomas Dent (should be
Thomas Dant). (Skinner).
Thomas Dant died some time after 1701 and before 1707. The last record
I found was dated 10/28/1695 when he and William Shercliffe were listed
as appraisers of the estate of Henry Spink, Sr. I also found a record
dated 3/20/1706 showing Thomas Dant on a list of persons who owed the
estate of Robert Mason (Mason died in 1701).
11/22/1712: Mrs. Mary Dant, age about 65 stated that her father, John
Shercliffe; her mother, Anne Shercliffe and her uncle, Henry Spink often
said her father and uncle sold land to Edward Cotton (MD Chancery
Records). 11/22/1712.
Next we have the will of William Dant, who I presume was a son of Thomas
Dant and Mary Shercliffe:
Will of William Dant, planter, SMC, 1/31/1714-5/16/1715. To: Cousins,
John Dant and William Mills and their heirs, "Poplar Neck" with land
adjoining, 76 ac. "Anstruther", equally. If the sd. John Dant dies
without issue, then to John Mills and his heirs. To: Brother, Peter
Mills, Exec., and to cousin Eleanor Nevitt, personalty. Wit.: William
Coade, Elizabeth Hooke, Stephen Vinall, Hannah Vinall.
NOTES: John Dant would have a son of a brother of his. It wouldn't be
John Dant born 1700 as that is his brother. William Mills was the son
of his half brother, Peter Mills, Jr. and Frances Slye. John Mills is
either the son of Peter Mills, Jr. and Frances Slye or of Nicholas Mills
and Elizabeth Heard--not sure which one at this point. Cousin, Eleanor
Nevitt was Eleanor Spink, dau. of his half sister, Elizabeth Mills and
William Spink. Eleanor Spink married Francis Nevitt before 1712.
"Anstruther", 30 ac., surveyed 4/29/1667 for Peter Miles (should be
Mills) joining to Shercliffe's land. Possessor: Mary Dant. 6/7/1709:
32 ac. to William Dant from Charles Daft and wife, Elizabeth. (SMC Rent
Rolls, 1639-1771). NOTE: Charles Daft was the second husband of
Elizabeth Mills.
========================
Willan, Richard, 25th Oct., 1662; 5th Sept., 1663. To wife Mary, execx., dower rights. To Philip Willan, land. To daus. Eliza: and Grace, goddau. Mary Mills, personalty. Overseers: Capt. Luke Gardner, John Shercliff. Test: Patrick Forrest, Thos. Hatton. 1. 193.
