  • Notes
    • see efsm vol 8, disagrees with the "the maryland semmes and kindred families, Harry Wright Newman. Mary was named in Marmadukes will and not in John's.

      RDS: One, the estate records of John Semmes (will probated Jan. 1724/5) indicate that his wife predeceased him whereas Mary Higdon was still living;
      Two, there is no evidence that the wife of John Semmes was even named Mary.
      Three, John Semmes is one generation too old for Mary Higdon; we need a younger Semmes to marry her.
      Marmaduke Semmes is the right generation for Mary Higdon, and this conclusion also gives us the siblings, John Higdon (Jr.) and Mary Higdon marrying the siblings Bathia Semmes and Marmaduke Semmes (children of Anthony Semmes).
      Moreover, we know that:
      --the wife of Marmaduke Semmes was named Mary;
      --the 2 Higdons mentioned in Marmaduke's will were brothers of Mary.
