Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published
by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical
      Press. p. 183. Mason County.
CHARLES A. MARSHALL, another of the Marshall family, son of Thomas, the
second son of Colonel Thomas Marshall, was educated by his uncle, Dr.
Lewis Marshall, and spent his life principally upon his farm in Mason
county. He served in the state legislature in 1840, 1855 and 1859. In
1861 he raised and commanded the Sixteenth Kentucky Regiment for the
United States service and was a strong Union man throughout the war. He
was an exemplary citizen, distinguished for his Christian-like piety,
his marked bravery and absolute integrity of character.

1850 Census Roll 212, Page 102 Mason Co.

188 COL. CHARLES ALEXANDER MARSHALL, b. in Washington, Kentucky., May 2, 1809; = September 12, 1833, PHOEBE A. PAXTON, b. in Washington, Kentucky., February 2, 1818. They are now living at "Walnut Grove," one mile from Washington, Kentucky. Col. Marshall was educated at "Buckpond," at the private school of his uncle, Dr. Louis Marshall. Under the tutelage of his father and older sisters, he read at home history, philosophy and belles letters. After marriage he purchased "Walnut Grove" of the descendants of his wife's grandfather, A. K. Marshall (68); and here he has spent his useful life, in the quiet pursuits of agriculture. His home has long been the center of refinement, literature and religion. Beneath his hospitable roof I have always found a welcome and generous entertainment. Ten years my senior, I have always found Col. Marshall a wise counsellor and a powerful protector. Of tall and ungainly person, his bodily activity, mental power and moral courage give him even yet a commanding influence. His boiling Kennan blood is assuaged by Marshall pride, sober thought, and the curtain lectures of his good wife. By nature, a "rough ashler," his wide experience, social culture and extensive reading, have polished him into brilliant marble. I have seldom met with one better versed in English and American history, and the politics and literature of the day. His associates have been the leading men of Kentucky. He is liberal in his views, and takes a lively interest in every reform.

GODLEN WEDDING -- TO MY SISTER, MRS. P. A. MARSHALL, AND HER HUSBAND,
COL. C. A. MARSHALL, OF MASON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, ON THE
OCCASION OF THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR MARRIAGE, SEPTEMBER
      12, 1833 -- 1883.
