      === Linda Reno Research Notes:

      "Mary, the widow of Thomas Cissell, married thirdly Mr. Daft--Charles Daft (Provincial Court Judgement TG-124). A dispute arose over the land on which Mary lived. In the case that evolved, Mary is referred to first as "the widow Cecil" and then as Mary Cecil Daft." (Donnelly).

      On the basis of this statement, Donnelly decided Mary Cissell, widow was married off third to Charles Daft, but she didn’t. She married first, Robert Thompson and second, Thomas Cissell—she was never married to Charles Daft.

      In August I requested a copy of the actual documents from the Maryland State Archives and just got them a couple of days ago.

      The case is entitled: Thomas Davis vs. Sebastian Thompson, planter and Mary Cecile. The all important statement says: And the sd Mary Cecile Deft hereunto by --____her attorney comes and defends the force and injury whence and saith that..

      She was Mary Cecile, defendant, not Mary Cecile Daft.

      In the file of Sebastian Thompson (Lois Green Carr's St. Mary's City Men's Career Files) is a summary of this case. The information is as follows:

      Provincial Court Judgements TG, f. 124-125, October 1702, Ejectment. Tho Davies v Sebastian Thomson, Planter and Mary Cecile. William Dent att for Plts (plaintiffs).

      Sebastian Thomson accused of ejecting Wm. Hayden from 1 dwelling 1 house 1 tobacco house 100 acres of land and pasture which Thomas Davies and Mary his wife, and Wm. Arthur and Grace, his wife had demised to him for a term which had not yet expired.

      Tennant in possession-Mary Cecile, a widow

      Plea-nothing in bar

      Thomas Davies and Mary his wife and Wm. Arthur and Grace his wife remain undefended. NOTE: William ARTIS vs. Arthur.

      Plts (plaintiffs) request his Majesty's writ to cause them to have possession of the land and places afsd. Plts also to recover costs.
