A LIST OF TAXPAYERS FOR HAMILTON PARISH. 1751 (*)

The following list of taxpayers was originally published in the Bulletin of the Fauquier Historical Society in June 1923, pages 239-242, under the title "List of Taypayers, Elk Run and Vicinity, 1751." The article states it is from the Account Book of Capt. John Crump, Sheriff of Prince William County, and that, "The original book was presented to the Fauquier Historical Society in 1922, by Col. Malcolm H. Crump, Bowling Green, Kentucky."

The person who furnished a copy of this list to your editor (I have mislaid my note, so he will have to be anonymous for now) attempted to locate the original book, but his contacts at the present-day Fauquier Historical Society have no information about its current location. We would appreciate it if persons having knowledge of the book would come forward. It is likely to have other valuable information.

Elk Run is a watershed which is now in southern Fauquier County. Before 1759, when Fauquier County was created, these were residents of Prince William. Your editor has not analysed the geographic distribution of names on this list, but will follow the suggestion of the original publisher that it is probably southern Hamilton Parish.

      Form of Account:
      1751. To Jno. CRUMP
To 5. County & Parish Levys.

The above list (the initial semi-alphabetic list) appears to have been compiled in 1751, and was probably added to through 1755 (the names out of order near the end of the list are probably new taxpayers in this district). The manuscript no doubt contains additional details about property owned or taxes owed by each individual. From the size of the list and the "parish levys" note at the end, I would guess it contains tithable information about all households in the district, not just those of land owners.

The list is important as a census of many residents of Hamilton Parish only six years after Dettingen Parish was cut off. (Most are no doubt residents though some of the names may represent non-resident taxpayers). No register or vestry book of Hamilton Parish survives from the colonial period. (DW)
