      IN THE NAME OF GOD Amen, I SAMUEL GRIFFING being very sick & weak in body but of perfect & sound memory & considerating ye uncertainty of this Life & ye certainty of death, do make & ordaine this my last Will and Testamt. in manner as followeth; principally I committ my Soul to God that gave it & my body to ye earth to be decently buried;
      Item I bequeath unto my Daughter, SARAH GRIFFING, my just Depts being paid one Bed & one iron pott two coves & calves & one young Mare of three years old & four thousand pounds of tobacco to be paid her when she shall come to ye age of eighteen;
      Item I bequeath to my Son, JAMES GRIFFING, one Bed & one iron pott two cowes & calves & one young Mare & four thousand pounds of tobbo: to be paid unto him when he shall come to ye age of Eighteen years,
      Item I do appoint my well beloved friend, JAMES FULLERTON, my whole & Sole Executor & guardian to my Children these words GRIFFING interlined before signed August ye 12th: 1698

      The Condicon of ye above obligacon is such that if the above bound JAMES FULLERTON, who at a Court held for Essex County the 10th day of September 1698 obtained a Probate of ye last Will & Testament of SAMLL. GRIFFING of this County deced., doe fullfill ye sd Will fully satisfie all Legatees as therein are expressed and performs all the Law onjoynes in such cases, that then the above obligacon to be void otherwise to stand and remain in full force & virtue

      THIS INDENTURE made the 31st day of January in year of our Lord 1688 Between HUMPHREY BOOTH of County of Rappa., Planter, of one part and SAMUEL GRIFFIN of the same County, Ship Wright, of other part Witnesseth that said HUMPHREY BOOTH for diverse causes and valuable considerations and especially for and in consideration of the full sum of Twenty two pounds Sterling money of England and one Boat Twelve foot by the Keele to be compleatly made and finished with Keels and Oares well and truely paid whereof the sd HUMPHREY BOOTH doth hereby acknowledge the Receipt whereof and himself to be fully satisfied and paid before the Sealing and delivery of these presents and thereof doth clearly discharge the said SAMUEL GRIFFING and his heirs by virtue of these presents doth bargain and sell unto SAMUEL GRIFFING and his heirs one ISLAND lying and being on the South side of RAPPA; RIVER in the County of Rappa: situate before the Plantation of Capt. BOOTH deced, containing Eighty acres be the same more or less withal! woods waters profitts and appertinances thereunto belonging unto him the sd SAMLL. GRIFFING his heirs and I HUMPHREY BOOTH for myself my heirs do covinant promise to and with sd SAML. GRIFFING his heirs to save and keep harmless sure and indemnified the sd SAML. GRIFFING that he said GRIFFING may have liberty to make use of what White Oake trees he shall think fitt for his use on the divident of land belonging to the sd BOOTH and lastly I the sd BOOTH do hereby promise to ratifie and confirm the above bargained premises with sufficient warrant and assurance by acknowledgement in the County Court of Rappa: to the use and behoofe of the sd SAMUEL GRIFFING his heirs and assignes forever as Witness my hand and Seale the day and yeare first above mentioned

      Item, I give unto my Cuz:, SARAH GRIFFING, one Cow and Calfe and one Cow yearling to be delivered as above;
      Item, I give my Brother, THOMAS GRIFFING, Son and Daughter, Five pounds Sterl. a piece to be paid to them on demand;
      Item, I give unto my Brother, LAWRANCE GRIFFING, Ten pounds ditto;
      Item, I give unto my Sister, SARAH GRIFFING, then pounds Sterl.
      Item, I give unto ELIZABETH, my well beloved Wife, all the rest of my lands goods and Chattles whatsoever dureing her natural! life and after my said Wifes decease to my Cozen, JNO: GRIFFING, Son of my Brother, SAMLL. GRIFFING, to him and his heires forever; Likewise I do appoint my well beloved Wife, ELIZABETH, sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament; In Testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale this 13th day of April! 1696

GRIFFIN and MARY my Wife of County of Rappa: in Virginia, Ship Wright, for and in consideracon of Fifteen pounds Sterling already in hand received have sold unto JAMES FULLERTON of the aforesd County his heirs Two hundred acres of land being in the aforesaid County it being part of the land formerly belonging to JAMES FULLERTON and by the sd FULLERTONs Will given unto sd MARY GRIFFIN, Daughter of the aforesd FULLERTON, which Two hundred acres of land I the sd SAMLL. GRIFFIN do bind myself my heirs unto the aforesd JAMES FULLERTON JUNR. his heirs in the just sum of One hundred pounds Sterling to warrant the sd land from the claim of all manner of persons that may lay any clame and likewise to acknowledge this Deed in Rappa Court with my Wife when ever required by the aforesd FULLERTON his heirs To the true performance of the same I bind myself my heirs unto the aforesd FULLERTON JUNR. his heirs and assigns As Witness our hands and seales this 4th day of June 1690

Planter, of ye one part and SAMMUELL GRIFFING of ye same County, Ship Wright, of the other part; Wittnesseth that the said HUMPHREY BOOTH for divers causes and valluable considerations and especially for ye full sum of Twenty two pounds Sterling money of England & one Boat twelve foot by the keele to be compleatly made and finished with sail's and oars well and truely paid, whereof the said HUMPHREY BOOTH doth hereby acknowledge, hath granted unto SAMMUELL GRIFFING and his heires for ever one ISLAND lyeing and being on the South side of the Rappahannock River in the County of RAPPAHANNOCK aforesaid, scituate before ye Plantation of Capt. BOOTH deceased, Eastwards faceing the River and pointing to ye land of AUGUSTINE BLYDENBIRD, Northward deced., containeing Eighty acres be the same more or less; To have & to hold the said ISLAND with all woods waters proffitts and appurtenances to the same belonging unto him the said SAMMUELL GRIFFING his heires & assignes for ever, And I the said HUMPHREY BOOTH for my selfe my heires doe promise to keep harmless the said SAMLL.
