      FRANCIS(5) THORNTON (Francis(4), Francis(3), Francis(2), Wm.(1) of "Fall Hill," Spotsylvania county, married in 1759 Ann, daughter of Rev. John Thompson, by his wife Butler Brayne, widow of Governor Spotswood.
      The will of Francis Thornton was dated Feb. 13, 1794, and proved in Spotsylvania April 8, 1795; gives his wife Anne all of his negroes, horses, cattle, sheep, household furniture, &c., and 200 acres of land for her life; to son Francis the remainder of his land where he lived, and the reversion of estate left his wife to daughters Elizabeth Gregory Thornton, Mary Thornton and Dorothea Thornton L500 each in specie; to daugher Francs Buckner a mourning ring; daughter Mildred Washington Maury L100 in specie.

      Note:
      Augt. 8, 1787. Mary Champe of Culpeper County, of first part; Francis Thornton of Spots. County, of second part; Churchill Jones of Orange County, of third part. Whereas, the sd. Mary is possessed of a large fee simple estate, as devisee of her late husband, Wm. Champe, as by his will recd. in Culpeper Co. will appear, and whereas, there is a marriage intended to be solemnized between the sd. Mary and the sd. Churchill Jones, and whereas, it is agreed between the sd. Churchill and Mary, that if the sd. marriage shall take effect then they are to hold and enjoy the sd. estate during their joint lives, and that it shall be lawful for the sd. Mary to dispose of any part of the sd. property, should she so desire by either deed or will, this Ind. therefore witnesseth, that the sd. Mary, with the consent of the sd. Churchill Jones, doth convey to the afsd. Francis Thornton, all the sd. property devised her by the will of her late husband, in trust for the sd. Mary, before the afsd. intended marriage and after the sd. marriage for the sd. Churchill Jones and the sd. Mary, as under the contract alluded to above, etc., etc., etc. Witnesses, G. Gray, Wm. Thompson, Sam Stephens. Augt. 8, 1787.
