Deeds, Wills, Patents, Etc., 1653-1659 (110a-111): Deposition of William Browne (age 23, X): test. in action of case, Herbert Smith v. Rice Maddock. Wit. was at RM's when HS came "to demand his maide of Dr. Mattocks. Dr. Mattocks desired him to leave the maide a week or fortnight longer in which time he thought he should make a perfect cure of it, but Herbert Smith replyed that his wife was sicke and could not spare her no longer. Dr. Mattocks replying againe told that if he would take her away it should be upon his bill for if you leave her I shall make a cure of her. Likewise Dr. Mattocks tolde him if he carried her away he should give him his bill which he gve him his bill for 600 weight of tobacco or thereabout." // Hannah Morgan (40, X, servant of Herbert Smith): ditto. She was at RM's for a cure for her leg.

p.73. Deed. 3 Sept 1656. Herbert Smith of Westmoreland Co., planter,
sells Wm Webb of same Co., planter, a parael of land, number of acres
not shown. Adjoins S.W. on Upper Muchoticke river, N.W. on a branch
of the said river, being the next branch but one to Francis Burrell's
house, eta, etc. Adjoins land patented by Thomas Peake and land of
Mr John Hiller.

p.73. This entry is headed "Fran Burrell and his wife giving their
Childe to Herbert Smith". Then "x x know yee That I Francis Burrall
to and with the consent ot my wife Ann Burrall" freely agrees to
deliver my sone Herbert Burrall into the hands and keeping ot my
loveing friends Herbert Smith Gent and his wife who are both Godfather
and Godmother unto my said Childe his Godmother by name called Mrs
Rebeccah Smith. The child bound to the Smiths till 21 Jan 1655/6.
