      Note:
      Richard Awbrey lived and died in that southern part of Rappahanaock County which, in 1692, became Essex County. As his will names James Meador as "my brother," Dorothy the wife of Richard Awbrey may have been a sister of John Meador. On page 127 of Essex County Deed Book 9, 1696-1699, is recorded the will of Richard Awbrey, of which an abstract reads:

      Will of Richard Awbrey, of Essex County, dated April 18, 1697; proved October 11, 1697.
      To my son Henry Awbrey all lands, one negro etc.; to be paid when he is 18 years of age; he to be put to school at fourteene yeares old and there continued for four years; and my Great seale Ring. [The possibility that this seal was of an Awbrey coat of arms may interest Awbrey descendants.]
      To my daughter Mary, a negro, 50 etc.; to be paid her at the age of Eighteene yeares or daye of marriage.
      I give unto my Daughter Dorothy a Negro Called Robin, fifty pounds Sterg, four Cowes and Calves and a feather bed and furniture to be paid her [at] the age of Eighteene yeares or the Daye of marriage, to be paid out of the Estate I give my wife.
      To the child my wife now goes with, 50.
      To ELIZABETH EVANS my God Daughter, a Heiffer etc.
      To my Brother John Meador, weareing Cloaths etc.
      To Thomas Hucklescott 2 1/2 yards of broadcloth.

      BYARD p RAMSEY v MORRIS p LUCAS In the Ejectione Firme brought by JAMES BYARD, Pltf. against CHARLES LUCAS, Defendant, for lands of the demise ofMOSES RAMSEY at a Court held for the County the 23d day of February 1708, SAMUELL MORRIS appeared and confessed Lease Entry and Ouster and prayed to be admitted Defendant in the stead ofCHARLES LUCAS which was granted, whereupon he pleded the generall issue Not Guilty &c. and the suit was continued till this Court for tryall &c., And now at this Court JAMES BYARD by his Attorney, DANIELL McCARTY, bing present as also SAMUELL MORRIS by his attorney, NATHANIELL POPE, it was orderd the Sheriffshould sumon a Jury to try

      honest and lawfull men ofhis Baylywick sworn and charged to say the truth in the premises, upon their Oaths doe say, ''Wee of the Jury doe find that one WILLIAM HARDIDGE of Cople Parish in the County ofWestmorland did bargaine and sell by Deed bearing date 19th December 1685 one hundred acres more or less unto PETER EVANS his heires for ever; Wee also doe find that said EVANS by his Last Will in Writeing under his had and seale beareing date the 23d day ofNovember 1696, did desire and bequeath the said land in these words following; 'Item I give and bequeath and it is my will and meaning that the land whereon I now live shall be and remaine to and for the proper use ofmy loveing Wife, ELIZABETH EVANS, HESTER EVANS, MARY EVANS, SARAH EVANS and REBECCA EVANS not to be sold or aliened by any ofthem by every ofthem to receive and enjoy one fifth part of the said land untill every oftheir respective marriages and after their or either oftheir marriages with one Husband they shall every ofthem enjoy their and every oftheir part and portion in the said Land dureing the naturallifeof their and every of their said Husbands, and after his decease then that the said part or portion ofthe said Land of my loving Wife, ELIZABETH EVANS, HESTER EVANS" MARY EVANS, SARAH
      EVANS and REBECCA EVANS soe marrying and her Husband dying to revert & come into the custody and possession of my Son, RICHARD EVANS, and his heires for ever;' Wee find that SAMUELL MORRIS did intermarry with ELIZABETH, the Widdow ofPETER EVANS. We doe likewise find that there is but two Daughters liveing of the said PETER, vizt MARY and SARAH which MARY is intermarryed with MOSES RAMSEY, who is Lessor ofJAMES BYARD, the Pltf., If the right ofthe
      land is in the Pltf. wee find twelve pence damage, ifnot then wee find for the Defendt." Whereupon it was ordered the Verdict should b entered on the Record of this County and the suit be continued till the next Court for tryall of the title &c.
