      iN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen. the Ninth day of March one thousand seven hundred and thirty two or thirty three, I LAW: BUTLER of Washington Parish in the County of Westmorland, Gent., being sick & weak but of perfect memmory thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, and calling to mind that it is appointed for all men once to dy do make and ordain this my last Will & Testament in the following manner & forme (vizt.) Imprimis. I give & bequeath my Soul to Almighty God that gave it nothing doubting but at the General. Resurrection to receive the same through the merritts of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, my body to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the descrestion of my Executors hereafter named.
      Item. I give & bequeath to my Daughter in Law, CORDEROY SANDFORD, four thousand weight of tobacco, two feather beds and furniture thereunto belonging commonly called her bed, and four head of neat Cattle to her & her heirs for ever;
      Item. I give & bequeath to my Grand Son, WILLIAM BERNARD, one Negro girl commonly cald. Frank to him & his heirs for ever;
      Item. I give & bequeath to my Neice, JOYCE BUTLER, a young Mare & side sadle (the sadle to be of fifty shillings price),
      Item. I give unto my Son in Law, RICHD. BERNARD, my Sword & my Mourning Ring. Item. I give unto my Nephew, LAW: BUTLER, my new suit of broad cloth;
      Item. I give unto my Son, LAW. BUTLER, all my Silver Spoons;
      Item. I give unto my Daughter, SARAH,my Riding Horse & the side sadle that was her Mothers & the furniture;
      Item. I give unto my Son, LAW., a young Horse that my Chesnut Mare brought & my new sadle & furniture;
      Item. I give unto my trusty and well beloved Friend, Capt. ANTHONY THORNTON, one Mourning Ring of twenty shills, price.
      Item. I give all my Lands to my Son, LAW., & all the rest of my Estate to be equally devided between my two Children, LAW: and SARAH.
      Item. It is my desire that my Negroe fellow commonly cald. ( ) may take his choyce which of my two Children he will live with and they shall Hive with, they taking him in their part of the devision of my Estate,
      And I do hereby constitute ordain & apoint my Trusty & well beloved Friends, Capt. ANTHONY THORNTON and RICHARD BERNARD to be the Executors of this my Last Will & Testament, revokeing disannulling all other heretofore by me made and this only to be my Last Will & Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written

      This Iast Will &Testament of LAWRENCE BUTLER, Gent., deced., was presented into Court by Capt. ANTHONY THORNTON & RICHARD BERNARD, his Executors, who made Oath thereto and being proved by the Oaths of JOHN DISHMAN & EDWARD NOWLES, two of the witnesses thereto, which with the Codicil thereto being also sworn to by the sd. Exers. and proved by the Oaths of JOHN DISHMAN, CHARLES ASHTON & EDWARD NOWLES, the witnesses thereto, are admitted to Record

      Wife Elizabeth all estate, real and personal for life or until son Daniel is 21 years of age, then deliver to him my dwelling plantation, 15 slaves, and if he die without issue to the sons of my brothers Dennis and Billington McCarty; Col. Presley Thornton, Mr. Joseph Morton, Mr. Augustine Washington and Mr. Lawrence Butler Gent exrs.; Witnesses Anthony Thornton, Francis Thornton and James Carter.

      Indenture made 3rd/4th October 1738 between DANIEL McCARTY of Parish Washington county of Westmoreland Gent. and JOHN POPE of Parish Copley county Westmoreland Planter .. by deeds of lease & release .. for Fourty pounds current money of Virginia sold 150 acres whereon CHRISTOPHER PRICHET now dwells in Hanover Parish binding upon lands of RAWLEIGH CHIN, GILES CARTER, JOHN BARTLETT & LAWRENCE BUTLER & is the same land conveyed by Christopher Prichet unto Daniel McCarty by Deeds of lease & release 29th/ 20th September 1738 ..
