      I Edward Belt in consideration of being justly indebted unto William Clarke in the quantity of 1590 pounds of tobacco to be delivered at Queen Anne Warehouse in good and sufficient cask due for the securing the payment thereof and also in consideration of 7 pounds ten shillings current money have sold unto William Clarke Negro boy Sam; provided that if Edward Belt shall well and truly pay the quantity of tobacco to William Clarke on or before August 31 next then this present writing to be void. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this May 3, 1780, Edward Belt in the presence of John Tyler, Frederick Sprigg and acknowledged before James Mullikin
