  • Notes

    • "At a Court James City 29 March 1628, Richard Bennet, aged 20 years, sworne and examined, sayth that Capt. Preen or his assignes receaved satisfaction of Mr. Edward Bennet for the passage of two men in the Hopewell, 1623 to be delivered in Virginia."
Edward Bennet imported many servants to his plantation in Virginia and his nephews Richard and Robert Bennet managed his plantations. Robert Bennett, his nephew, has often been confused with Robert Bennet, his brother, for it appears from the Minutes of the General Court in 1628 that Robert Bennet, his nephew, was of the age of 18, as follows:
"Nicholas Thompson of the age of 25 yeares or thereabouts sworne and examined sayth that John Burland coming to Mr. Richard Bennett demanded of him three men which his uncle was to deliver unto him whereupon Mr. Bennett brought out and tendered him 3 of the age of 17 yeares, the youngest of them as he then told him, but Burland refused to accept them and soe departed.
Robert Bennet of the age of 18 or thereabouts sworne and examined sayth in effect as much as Nicholas Thompson hath already averred.
