Sarah Lewis was the first wife of Robert Woodson per Genealogies of Virginia Families - Woodson Family.

Sarah died before 1710 because in that year Robert Woodson, requested to be "liberated" from his Henrico County, Virginia Quaker community in order to marry Rachel Watkins, who was not of that Quaker community. He requested to be received back into his earlier community of Friends in 1723, perhaps after the death of Rachel.

Robert Woodson, son of Robert Woodson and Elizabeth Ferris, first married Sarah Lewis, second married Rachel Watkins.

John Woodson names in his will of 1684, the four youngest sons of his brother Robert, viz., Robert, Richard, Joseph and Benjamin and also cousin John Woodson (Cousin meant "nephew" in the seventeenth century) per Genealogies of Virginia Families - Woodson Family.

Robert Woodson (Robert, John) lived in Henrico, Virginia though he owned lands in Goochland, Virginia. In his will he calls himself Robert Woodson, Sr., to distinguish himself from his nephew Robert Woodson, Jr. His will was made 6 July 1729 and recorded in Henrico, Virginia Court February 1729. It names sons: Stephen (Stephen Woodson of Henrico, who married Mary Woodson, daughter of Joseph Woodson and died in 1761); Joseph, to whom land in Goochland; Robert, to whom land in Goochland; Johathan; Elizabeth; Sara; Judith.

According to the "Standard" he had by Sarah Lewis: Stephen; Joseph who married Elizabeth Mattox; Robert, left no issue: Elizabeth married John Povall; Sarah, married Joseph Parsons and Mary, died unmarried; Agnes married Richard Williamson. Sarah Lewis, his first wife apparently died prior to 1710 because Robert Woodson because in that year Robert Woodson, Jr. requested to be "liberated" from his Henrico County Quaker community in order to marry Rachel Watkins, who was not of that Quaker community. He requested to be received back into his earlier community of Friends in 1723, perhaps after the death of Rachel. A wife is not mentioned in his will dated in 1729.

And by Rachel Watkins he had: Elizabeth married John Knight; Judith married John Cooke "mother of all the money-making Cookes" The will of John Knight was proved in Lunenburg on 12 March 1772 and names wife Elizabeth children: Peter, William, Joseph, Rachel, John, Jonathan, Charles, Woodson, Mary Lea and Lucy Cooke. Witnesses, Miller Woodson and Thomas Jeffres. (Genealogies of Virginia Families - Woodson Family)

Robert Woodson, Jr., born about 1660 at Curles, Henrico County, Virginia spent his entire life there and died there in 1729. He married first Sarah Lewis, second Rachel Watkins. His will, signed July 6, 1726, advitted to probate in February 1929, mentions four sons and three daughters. Of these Elizabeth Woodson, who married John Knight, was by her father's second marriage to Rachel Watkins. (Genealogies of Virginia Families - from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography)

Maternal Ancestors of Sidney Lanier by John M. Harrison and Aubrey Starke, published in Genealogies of Virginia Families - from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, shows: Robert Woodson, Jr., born about 1660 at Curles, in Henrico County, spent his entire life there and died there in 1729. He married first Sarah Lewis, second Rachel Watkins. His will, signed July 6, 1726, admitted to probate in February 1729, mentions four sons and three daughters. Of these, Elizabeth Woodson who married John Knight, was by her father's second marriage, to Rachel Watkins. (The Knight/Woodson connection is a focus of the data.)

Neither of the two wives attributed to this Robert Woodson are mentioned in his will. There are apparently two daughters named Elizabeth, one by Sarah Lewis who married John Povall and one by Rachel Watkins who married John Knight per Genealogies of Virginia Families. It is not known which one is named in the will. Logically it would be the younger daughter, sister to Jonathan if she survived. Because of her placement in the will, it could also be considered it was the older daughter.

Note: Woodson Watcher pg 22: O. Norris Smith states: "I have been unable to find any records of Dover Monthly Meeting founded 1723. Robert WoodsonJr. (1664-1729) married "out of unity" in 1691 to Sarah Lewis of St. Johns Church (of England), but in 1714 in Henrico County, the will of Henry Watkins, another witness, and the Henrico Monthly Meeting records show that on 7 July 1723 Robert Woodson and Wm. Porter desire to be received in Communion and fellowship --- going into the world for a wife. Published genealogies credit Robert with a daughter Mary, but in his will dated July 1729, she is not mentioned. I suggest that she was "disowned" for marrying Stephen Sampson "out of unity" in1728. Stephen Will: Mary, son Stephen, Charles, Richard and Samuel and daughter Elizabeth Sampson. Mary's will proved in 1774: Sons, Charles,Richard, William, Stephen and Samuel and daughter Mary, Sarah, and Eliza.
