      Before arriving in Virginia:

      28 Feb 1651 - Sampson Cooper, Alderman of Ripon, Co. York.
      Information that in 1643 he assisted the late King's party with horse, men, and arms,
      went armed at night, broke open men's doors, took men, apprentices, and servants, and
      brought them before Sir Ralph Hansby to enlist for the King. Also that he lent money to
      buy horses for the King's garrisons.

      IN YE NAME OF GOD Amen. I SAMPSON COOPER late of RIPPIN in the County of YORKE in England, Alderman, being weake in body but in p:fect memory praised be God doe make & ordaine this to be my last Will & Testamt. as followeth;
      First, I doe bequeath my Soule to God who gave it me and my body to the Earth from whence it came, desireing to have xpian & decent buriall in the Land of Coll. JOHN TRUSSELL & in his burying place;
      Itm, I desire that my loveing Freinds, Major GEORGE COLCLOUGH and JOHN TRUSSELL both of this County of Northumberland in Virginia to be Overseers of this my Will and that they ( ) pleased to take care of my Sonne, SAMUELL COOPER, after my decease, and alsoe of all such goods that doth belong unto me and that all such debts that they shall find to be due & belong unto me in this Country of Virginia I desire that they use their utmost endeavours from time to time to receive into their custody & send it for England ( ) all goods & wares as is at present by me ( ) sold to the best advantage excepting those Guifts ( ) that I given out of them; Allsoe it is my ( ) Son.       Item. I doe give untomy ( ) medow land at MANDLAN ( ) the CHAPPELL being about ( ) Item. I give mor( ) of meddow land that I bought of mr. EDWARD WRIGHT and his Brother, NICHOLAS, & of MILES SMITH, it being three roode joyning to the former five acres & a halfe;

One roode more I give unto my Sonne, JONATHAN, lately in the occupacon of Alderman WARWICYE. & one roode more I give unto him in the same feild neare thereunto LEONARD PICKESGILL path the same quantity of ground, one roode lying upon the South side of mine & his butteth upon Mr. JEFFERSONs on the West, for this roode & the former three roodes up the acre for JONATHAN in SWILLINGINGS;
      Item. I give unto JONATHAN, my Sonne, more one little close neare unto Mr. JENNINGS
      his house, neare unto a Lane called the PREST-LANE, now in the occupacon of THOMAS DAY which close I bought of FRANCIS PLUMLAND & THOMAS his Sonne

I give unto SAMUELL & JONATHAN, my Sonnes, the House garden & Orchard at ALHAWES GATE in RIPPEN with all the appurtenances thereto belonging, joyntly severally, desireing God to blesse them and that they may both agree & serve the Land; Item. I give unto my Wife, BRIDGETT, the full & utmost some of my house & land which can be made of it during her naturall life desireing my Wife & my Children to see all my due debts paid unto every man, which is no great summes

Whereas &c., Now knowe yee that I the said SAMUELL MATHEWS Esqr. &c,. give & grant unto Mr. HUGH LEE 1100 acres of land in POTOMACK FRESHES above PUSCATOWAY on the Westward side of the River, bounding Easterly upon the POTOMACK RIVER, Southerly upon the Land called Mr. CLAIEs Land & running Northerly alonge the River from CLAY 275 poles WEsterly from the River parallel to Mr. CLAY 640 poles into the Woods; the sd.
