Joseph Alexander Gray (born May 24, 1830; died February 16, 1902 –( tombstone in Young/Gray cemetery on Bixby Road ?), son of Capt. Alexander Gray and Elizabeth Price, He was married to Jane Young March 15, 1855. Jane Young Gray (Feb. 29, 1832-January 12, 1899) is buried in Durham Churchyard Row 19S #3. He inherited Lot 2 in the division of his father’s estate: 519 acres from parts of “Middleton” and “Manisclear” (DB GAH 1, folio 400). According to the 1885 church register, all in this family were baptized, confirmed, and communicants at Durham. This is probably the Joseph A. Gray that served either on the vestry or as church warden. At sometime this family moved membership to Port Tobacco according to church register.
Joseph Alexander Sr. and Jane Young Gray were confirmed at St. James Chapel in November 1885. Rev. Thomas. O. Tongue was rector. Also confirmed at this time were Joseph Alexander Jr. , Augustus Young Gray, John R. , Frank H., Walter H. and Florence Gray. (5 sons, 1 daughter)
      Their children included:
      A. Joseph Alexander Gray Jr.(April 7, 1856-July 7, 1921) married Augusta Young (April 10, 1862- Aug. 10, 1951)and moved to Washington Co, Md. (This is not the one that married Miriam chandler.) his son did
      1. Joseph Alexander Gray III. (Sept. 7. 1897-Nov. 19, 1968) Born in Washington Co., Md. Died in Washington, D.C. I believe his first wife was Miriam Temple Chandler (see below) and his second wife was Evelyn Wardlaw White whom he married Oct. 23, 1943 [Find a Grave]

Miriam Temple Chandler Gray Sept. 11, 1902-Nov. 1, 1938. Her parents were Charles T. Chandler and Mary A. Chandler. (See Chandler Family) She was baptized Sept. 11, 1904 at St. James Chapel by Rev. William Brayshaw. Her family lived on Tayloe’s Neck Rd. She married after the 1930 census. Tombstone says she was the wife o f Joseph A. Gray. I believe this to be Joseph Alexander Gray (1897-1968), son of Joseph Alexander and Augusta Young Gray. Can not find evidence of this marriage at this point. She is buried in Row 22N #6. This row also has other Chandlers and Grays buried in it. George Dyson says that she taught him in school at Nanjemoy in the 3rd or 4th grade. He remembers she died young in childbirth and that the school was closed on the afternoon of her funeral.
