      THIS INDENTURE made the Second day of May in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twenty six, Between WILLIAM HANSFORD of the Parish of Saint George and County of Spotsylvania of one part and WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM of the Parish and County aforesaid of the other part; Wittnesseth that WILLIAM HANSFORD in consideration of sum of five shillings to him in hand paid hath and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM their heirs all that four hundred acres of land granted unto WILLIAM HANSFORD by Patent bearing date the fourteenth day of May one thousand seven hundred and twenty three and bounded, Beginning at two red Oaks on the upper side a Branch of MUSSAPONNAX SWAMP, thence South sixty degrees West two hundred and ten poles to the line of AUGUSTINE SMITH, thence along his line South by East three hundred and eighty poles to a white Oak, thence North East three hundred and fourty poles to two white Oaks and two red Oaks at the head of a Valee, thence North thirty degrees West two hundred and seventy two poles to the beginning place scituate in Parish and County aforesaid and the rents issues and profitts thereof; To have and to hold the seat or tract of land and premises with appurtenance unto WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM their heirs from the day before the date hereof and dureing the term of one whole year paying therefore the rent of one eare of Indian Corne at the Feast of Saint Michael the Arch Angel only if the same be lawfully demanded to the intent that by virtue of these presents and of the Statute for transferring uses into
      possession WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM may be in the actuall possession thereof and enabled to take a release of the inheritance therof to them and their heirs; In Wittness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written

      At a Court held for Spotsylvania County on Tuesday the Third day of May Anno Domini 1726 WILLIAM HANSFORD acknowledged this his Deed of Lease for land unto WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM, likewise JOHN QUARLES after SARAH HANSFORD's Power of Attorney to him was proved by the Oaths of RICHARD CHEEK and BENJAMIN GRAYSON acknowledged her Right of Dower of the said Land unto the said ARVEN and BECKHAM and at the motion of the said WILLIAM ARVEN the same was admitted to Record

      KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I SARAH HANSFORD, Wife of WILLIAM HANSFORD, do hereby constitute and appoint JOHN QUARLES to relinquish my Right of Dower to a parcell of land scituate in Spotsylvania County and Parish of Saint George unto WILLIAM ARVEN and WILLIAM BECKHAM containing four hundred acres of land and what my said Attorney shall do in and to the premises I allow to be as good and valid as if I were present, In Wittness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this 3d day of May 1726

Lease for lives of Simon Beckham his son and Phillis Beckham his wife. 100 acres on south side River Rappidanne, part of 40,000 acres granted to Alexander Spotswood and called the Spotsylvania Tract. Yearly rent for first four years, one ear of Indian corn, and afterward 600 pounds of tobacco due first on 25 Dec. 1739.
