Theophilus Tabbs was born in St. Maryís County prior to 1760 and was the son of Rev. Moses Tabbs, born in Ireland and his wife, Eleanor Smoot (daughter of Barton Smoot, Jr., born in Charles County, and his wife, Susanna Mackall Clarke).

Theophilus Tabbs died in Charles County prior to October 11, 1803. His wife Amelia was his admx. Her securities were Samuel Chapman and William B. Smoot, so I started searching for a girl named Amelia Chapman (no) or a girl named Amelia Smoot (bingo).

The will of William Barton Smoot names his daughter, Amelia Tabbs. Other researchers had previously concluded that her name was Amelia Tabbs Smoot, but it wasnít. She was Amelia Smoot and her married name was Amelia Tabbs. The wording in her fatherís will was misleading she was single, but a widow. As it turns out, Amelia Smoot and Theophilus Tabbs were second cousins via his mother Eleanor Smoot.

Will of William Barton Smoot (of Thomas), Charles Co., 10/6/1816-1/8/1817. Wife: Margaret, the use of all of my estate, real and personal, during her life in lieu of her right of dower. Son: John Weems Smoot, all of my real estate after the death of my wife, Margaret. My personal estate is to be divided among all of my children. Daughter: Amelia Tabbs to have the use of a room in my house together with wood for one fire place during her single life. Brother: Thomas Smoot to be supported with board and clothing in my house by my wife and after her death to the care of my son, John whose kind attention I commend his uncle. Exec.: Son, John Weems Smoot. Wit.: Susanna McC. Watts , John L. Hawkins, Samuel Martin, Caleb Hawkins. (Charles County Wills, 1808-1817, p. 504, image 271, Family Search).

The settlement of the estate of Theophilus Tabbs provided more useful information. One of his representatives was Eleanor Dent, the child of Elizabeth Dent, a deceased sister. At the time I had no idea which Dent she could have married to but in going back over the estates of the siblings of Theophilus Tabbs, I found the name of Henry Dent.

Henry Dent, son of George Dent, Jr. and Eleanor Hawkins, had a daughter named Eleanor Hawkins Dent. Newman and others had not identified a wife for him. His wife was Elizabeth Tabbs. Eleanor Hawkins Dent, b. 1799, married John Edelen who died in 1837 according to Newman.

It appears from the settlement papers that Sarah Tabbs married John Mackall, Jr., (misspelled as Makal) son of John Mackall and Margaret Gough. John Mackall, Jr.ís sister was Ann Mackall who married Walter Smith III and they were the parents of Margaret Mackall Smith who married President Zachary Taylor.

1/11/1803: Admin. accts. of Thomas Tabbs, SMC. Brothers and sisters, equally: Dr. Barton Tabbs, Theophilius Tabbs, Alexander Smoot, Henry Dent, John McKall's children, Susanna McCaul Hebb. Admx.: Susanna McCaul Hebb. (SMC Balances and Distributions).

5/26/1807: Final account and distribution of the estate of Theophilus Tabbs by Amelia Tabbs, Admx. Sureties: Samuel Chapman and William B. Smoot. Representatives: One brother and three sisters, to wit: Barton Tabbs, Abigail Smoot, Susanna McCaul Hebb, and Sarah Makall and Eleanor Dent, the child of Elizabeth Dent, a deceased sister. Came Amelia Tabbs, admx. Distribution: Amelia Tabbs, Widow, 1/2 (31.17.48); Barton Tabbs (6.7.5 5/8); Alexander Smoot in right of his wife, Abigail (6.7.5 5/8); Susanna McCaul Hebb (6.7.5 5/8); John Makal in right of his wife, Sarah (6.7.5 5/8); Eleanor Dent, daughter of Elizabeth Dent, the residue (6.7.5 5/8)
