" 7 F VA Laura " 4 F VA Helen " 1/12 F VA === http://genforum.genealogy.com/marshall/messages/7489.html I'm hoping to verify the parents of a man named Coleman Marshall, who was born in August 1790 in Orange County, Virginia, and lived in that county until the mid-1850s, when he moved to East Tennessee with his family. Coleman married Joanna Bickers, daughter of Nicholas Bickers, and had a large family. He was a tanner by trade and served as a deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Orange County. I have family papers written about 80 years ago that indicate Coleman was the fourth child (and second son) of Thomas Marshall and his wife, Sarah, who moved to Orange County from Culpepper County in the late 1700s and settled near Zion Church (Gordonsville area). There is speculation that Thomas Marshall's wife named Sarah Coleman, but I have no proof of this. Furthermore, the records indicate that Coleman Marshall's grandfather was also named Thomas Marshall and was married (according to his will) to a woman named either Lannah or Hannah. My Thomas R. Hawkins has very good friend, Coleman Marshall. Both are probably tanners. Both are very close to Benjamin and Mary/Polly Hawkins of Orange County, VA in the early to mid 1800's. Coleman is married to Mary/ Polly Hawkins's sister, Joanna Bickers Marshall. It is possible that both Coleman's father and grandfather were named Thomas. The elder probably lived in Culpeper while the younger Thomas moved his family to Orange County while his children were young. There also seems to have been some connection with Tabitha Sutton in Orange County as both Coleman Marshall and Benjamin Hawkins appear as exectors of her will.
