      William Johnson, born say 1705, a "free negro," petitioned the Prince George's County court on 27 June 1732 saying that he came into Maryland as a free man with Captain William Spaven who sold him as a slave to Colonel Joseph Belt. Captain Spaven testified that he met up with William Johnson in London, that Johnson stated that he was in great necessity, asked what voyage he was bound out on, and agreed to go with him to Maryland. When they arrived in Maryland, Spaven sold Johnson to Colonel Belt for his lifetime. The court ruled that Johnson serve five years from the time of his arrival in 1729 [Court Record 1730-2, 541].

Merchant of the one Part and Joseph Belt of the said County Gent of the other Part Witnesseth that the said James Russell for & in Consideration of the Sum of One hundred and eighty Pounds Sterling to him in hand paid by the said Joseph Belt the Receipt whereof the said James Russell doth hereby Acknowledge As also for and in Consideration of Lucy Watson wife of Henry Watson of Prince Georges Creek & Rock Creek & beginning at a bounded Cedar standing on a Rock called the Key of all Keys and running thence East North East One hundred and ninety two Perches then North One hundred and seventy Perches then North Eight Degrees West sixty Perches then South forty seven Degrees West two hundred and four Perches then with a streight line to the beginning containing One hundred ninety six Acres And also one other Parcel of Land being part of the afsd Tract called The Widows Mite Beginning in the given line of the said Tract two hundred and seventy Perches from the bounded Cedar on the said Rock called the Key of all Keys and running thence East North East Ninety six Perches then North Fifty eight Degrees West thirty Perches thence North eighty three Degrees West sixty four Perches then with a streight line to the beginning containing Nineteen and a half Acres more or less both which said last mentioned Parcels of Land were by Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing Date the Twenty first Day of August in the Year of our Lord Seventeen Hundred twenty five Sold and Conveyed by Thomas Fletchal of Prince Georges County Planter unto the said John Bradford his Heirs and Assigns for ever And also all that Tract or Parcel of Land being another Part of y.e said Tract of Land called the Widows Mite Beginning at a bounded Spanish Oak standing in the Second Line of the said Land and beginning in the second line of the said Land at the End of One hundred and seventy Perches and running thence North Two hundred thirty eight Perches South fifty eight Degrees West One hundred sixty six Perches South two Degrees East Eighty Perches then with a streight line to the beginning Tree Containing One hundred and twenty four Acres more or less which said last mentioned Tract or Parcel of Land was by Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing Date on or about the Ninth Day of May in the Year of our Lord Seventeen hundred and thirty Sold and Conveyed by William Kinshaw of Prince Georges County Planter unto the said John Bradford his Heirs and Assigns for Ever as by the several Deeds of Bargain & Sale may appear All which Lands among others were heretofore convey'd by Henry Watson afores.d to the said James Russell by his Deed indented as aforesaid bearing Date as aforesaid Together with all the Right Title Property Interest Claim and Demand whatsoever of him the said James Russell of in or unto the aforesaid Tracts or Parcels of Land with the Appurtenances to the same belonging & every Part and Parcel thereof To have and to hold the said Tracts or Parcels of Land with the Appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining unto the ^afore^said Joseph Belt his Heirs and Assigns for Ever to such use and to and for such Intents and Purposes as are herein after expressed and declared (That is to say) to the Use and Behoof of Lucy Watson the Wife of the aforesaid Henry Watson his Heirs and Assigns for Ever and to and for no other Use or Uses Intents or Purposes whatsoever And the said James Russell for himself and his Heirs the aforesaid Tracts or Parcels of Land to him the said Joseph Belt his Heirs and Assigns to and for the Use aforesaid against all Manner of Persons claiming by from or under him the said James Russell and his Heirs shall and will warrant and forever defend In Witness whereof the Party to these Presents hath set his Hand and       Tracts of Land and Premisses therein mentioned to be the Right of the within named Joseph Belt his Heirs and Assigns for the Uses therein mentioned At the same Time came Ann Russell Wife of the said James Russell who being privately and out of the Hearing of her said Husband examined did freely and voluntarily confess that she gave up all her Right Title Claim Dowry and Interest of in and to the within mentioned Lands and Premisses to the within named Joseph Belt his Heirs and Assigns without being induced thereto by Fear or Threats of ill Usage from her said Husband or Fear of his Displeasure according to the Act of Assembly in such Cases made and provided Acknowledged before John Hepburn
