William Johnson, born say 1705, a "free negro," petitioned the Prince George's County court on 27 June 1732 saying that he came into Maryland as a free man with Captain William Spaven who sold him as a slave to Colonel Joseph Belt. Captain Spaven testified that he met up with William Johnson in London, that Johnson stated that he was in great necessity, asked what voyage he was bound out on, and agreed to go with him to Maryland. When they arrived in Maryland, Spaven sold Johnson to Colonel Belt for his lifetime. The court ruled that Johnson serve five years from the time of his arrival in 1729 [Court Record 1730-2, 541].

Price: Natural affection and a competent "maintainances," and considering that said JOSEPH BELT is grown to the age and maturity of managing the affairs of the country, and in consideration of the fact that said JOSEPH BELT has released his title to a tract called "Friends Choyce" to said ELIZABETH BELT by deed dated 12 April 1701.
Property: A 150 acre parcel consisting of parts of the tracts "Good Luck," and the addition to this tract called "Widows Purchase," lying in P. G. Co. on the forks of the west branch of Patuxent River and on the north side of Beaver Damm Branch, bounding on THOMAS HILLARY'S tract "Three Sisters," and "Addition to Good Luck." The part of "Good Luck" conveyed to said JOSEPH BELT had been willed to him by his father JOHN BELT, to be received after the decease of his mother, the said ELIZABETH BELT.

him in hand paid by the said Joseph Belt the Receipt whereof the said James Russell doth hereby Acknowledge As also for and in Consideration of Lucy Watson wife of Henry Watson of Prince Georges County aforesaid Gent of the Right of Dower of the said Lucy Watson of in and to sundry Tracts of Land conveyd and made over to the said James Russell by y.e aforesaid Henry Watson as by his Deed
