Montgomery County Land Records, 1777-1781; Liber A1, Page 443. Bond, recorded at the request of Philander [Virlinda in fathers Benjamin Gatton will] Lewis. We, Elizabeth Lewis, widow, and mother of John Lewis, decd, William Lewis, Samuel Lewis, Isaac Lewis, and Elizabeth Gatton, Elinour Lewis, and Andrew Burtle, who married Susanah, sister to John Lewis, decd, the whole of the afd persons being heirs and representatives of the sd John Lewis decd, and of M, are bound to Philander Lewis, widow of the sd John Lewis, decd, of M, in the full sum of 20,000 £, to be paid without any deduction, to the sd Philander Lewis, to the payment of which the afd heirs and representatives bind themselves this Dec 6, 1779. The condition of the above obligation is such that, whereas the sd Philander Lewis, widow of John Lewis, decd, has given up all claim that he has or ought to have, to any real or personal estate, her husband, John Lewis, decd, had or ought to have before she, the sd Philander, was married to him, the sd John Lewis, to the above bound Elizabeth Lewis, widow, William Lewis, Samuel Lewis, Isaac Lewis, Elizabeth Gatton, Elinour Lewis, and Andrew Burtle, they appearing to be the legal heirs or representatives of the sd John Lewis decd, except the sd Philander should prove to be with child by the sd John Lewis decd, then, and in that case, the whole of sd John Lewis' estate, real or personal, shall be the right of sd child, whether male or female. It is agreed that sd Elizabeth Lewis, widow, William Lewis, Samuel Lewis, Isaac Lewis, Elizabeth Gatton, Elinour Lewis, and Andrew Burtle, shall forever quit claim and never demand any more of the estate that sd Philander Lewis has or had in her own right or by the right that she has to any other estate by her father's, grandfather's, or grandmother's wills, and that all persons claiming in the right and property of the sd John Lewis decd, shall warrant and defend all of her estate as afd to sd Philander, and lastly, they bind themselves that they shall pay all debts, dues, or demands that are justly owing from the sd John Lewis decd to any persons, on performing all the above covenants, then this obligation to be void. The above condition is excepted as to Benjamine Lewis, and the above bound oblige themselves to pay him his share in proportion to what they receive.
