Dll Mary Beale, b 1750 at 'Chestnut Hill', md in or about
1780, Capt. Wm. Brooke of 'Locust Dale’, then in Cul¬
peper Co., Va., later in 1833, in Rappahannock County
where he had settled on land grants made by his grand¬
father, Robt. Brooke, Jr., the 'Horsehose.Knight
(see Brooke Fam.). The house which he built there &
called 'Locust Dale' is standing (1934) on the road
known as 'The Lee Highway', between Ben Venue (former¬
ly known as Gaines X Roads) & Washington, Va., about
five miles from the latter town.
Mary Beale is referred to in the Williamson Ball
bill in chancery of 1778 as 'still unmarried' & in the
answer thereto of the executors & others, signed Dec.
12, 1787, as 'Mary, the wife of Wm. Brooke'. Thus,.
it is certain that she md before the latter date & it
is probable that the marriage was late in 1778, shortly
after Wm. Brooke's enlistment in the Revolutionary
Army expired or early in 1779.
Diary of Col. Landon Carter...Friday...9 Oct. 1772.
mentions - 'Two days ago the hair brained Molly Beale
fell from her horse & broke her arm, a good warning
to all madcaps'. (Wm-Mary Quart., P 38). This might
have been the above Mary Beale who would have been 12
years old in 1772.
