Nathaniel Chapman came from England with his father. He was the owner of large real estate situated in Charles County, Maryland, and also in Stafford, Fauquier and Fairfax Counties, Virginia. He was an experienced ironmaster with business interests in Maryland and Virginia. Nathaniel was a charter member of the Ohio Company. Augustine and Lawrence Washington each named him as an executor of his estate.

When he married Constantia Pearson, Constantia asked for the 150 acre tract on which they built their home, part of one owned first by John Alexander and then the Pearsons, from her brother so she could live next to them across the estuary. She and Nathaniel built Summer Hill there on that plantation. Nathaneil and Constantia eventually moved to Charles County, Maryland. Summer Hill, however stayed in the family until 1851, at which time all but the burial ground was sold. In 1940, the site was required for the National Airport and Mrs. Helen Chapman Calvert of Alexandria supervised the transfer of the burial ground to Pohick Church.

The History of the Chapman and Alexander Families states that the cemetery was moved to allow extension of Potomac Rail Yards. Likewise, it states that Summer Hill was inherited from Constantias' father, Simon Pearson.
