      1775-1803 British Mercantile Claims
Claims of Robert Jardine, McCall, Smellie & Company and Geo: McCall [pp . 97·98):
James Abott, Culpeper. £11.19.0, £79.6.9 and £0.6.8. He left this country before the war and went to South Carolina. At the time of his removal he carried with him about four slaves and some other personal property. A separation had taken place between him and his wife and the court having charged his estate with the payment of an annual sum for alimony, he ran away in order to avoid it as he himself declared. About four years ago he was living in Abbeville Co. , S.C . Suit is now depending in the court of Culpeper County to foreclose the equity of redemption to a tract of land mortgaged by James Abbott to secure the payment of the debt to McCall, Smellie & Co. This land is worth considerably more than
      the amount of the claim.
