Witnesseth that the said JOHN POWELL and MICHALL his Wife for Four thousand pounds of merchantable tobacco in cask paid or secured to be paid unto the said JOHN POWELL have granted unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs and assigns One hundred and twenty acres of land being in the Parish of FARNHAM and County of Richmond aforesaid, beginning at a marked red Oak standing on the West side of WEBBS BEAVERDAM, thence N: W: to a Hickory, thence East to a red Oak, thence South E: so far and from thence to the first hereby mentioned red Oak as shall make up the full coinplimt: of One hundred and twenty acres of Land as is before hereby granted as also all profitts & appurtinances to the said Land belonging as also all the right and demand which the said JOHN POWELL and MICHALL his Wife can claim in the same by force and virtue of the Patent made and granted from the PROPRIETORS of the NORTHERN NECK of VIRGINIA unto the said JOHN POWELL dated the 20th. day of July 1696, or by any other ways or means whatsoever or howsoever; To have and to hold the said Land and all premisses unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs and assigns from henceforth forever, subject nevertheless unto the Quitrents which from henceforth shall grow due in respect of the premisses unto the said PROPRIETORS, And the said JOHN POWELL and his heirs unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs the said Land with the appurtinances hereby granted will forever warrant and defend against the demand of any persons whatsoever & discharged from all other Rents & all manner of troubles whatsoever & the sd JOHN POWELL & MICHALL his Wife have hereby ordained JOHN TAVERNER for them & either of them to acknowledge these presents as their Attorney before the worshipful Court of Richmond for the confirmation hereo. Witnesseth that the said LUKE WILLIAMS for the sum of 11625 thousand pounds of tobacco to him truly in hand paid by the said JOHN BATTIN hath absolutely grant and confirm unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs and assigns a certain parcell of land being in the Parish & County aforesd. containing One hundred forty and six acres and bounding as followeth (vizt.) beginning at a Hickory in the said LUKE WILLIAMS his line and thence running E: N: E: to a white Oak, thence N: E: to a live Oak, thence MINA to a Hickory in the Line of Mr. JOHN WEBB and the said LUKE WILLIAMS, thence S:West to a red Oak corner tree to the said LUKE WILLIAMS his small Patent and line of trees to the greater, thence South W: to a Spanish Oak corner tree to the said LUKE WMS. thence along the said WILLIAMS his line of marked trees to the first mentioned beginning place, the same being part of two Devidents patented and taken up by JOHN WILLIAMS, late of the County aforesd. deced, one of the said Patents dated 18th of March 1663/4 and containing Six hundred and fifty acres and the other dated September 18th Ano: 1665 and containing Six hundred acres and by the said JOHN WILLIAMS given in his Last Will and Testament to the said LUKE and JOHN, his Sons, and the said JOHN, the younger, dying without issue, his part descended to the said LUKE, To have and to hold the said One hundred forty six acres of Land together with all its rights and appurtinances belonging unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs and assigns forever. And the said LUKE WILLIAMS for himself his heirs and assigns do promise with the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs and assigns in manner and form following, that the granted pre- misses shall from henceforth forever remain unto the said JOHN BATTIN his heirs & assigns clearly acquitted from all manner of former sales or other Incumbrances made or done by the said LUKE WILLIAMS his heirs or assigns.       THIS INDENTURE made the 7th day of March Anno Dom: 1716 Between WM: STOKES & ELIZABETH his Wife of County of ESSEX of one part and JNO: NAYLOR of County of Richmond of other part; Wittnesseth that WILLM: STOKES and ELIZABETH his Wife for the sum of Six hund:d pounds of lawful! Toba: to them in hand pd, by these prests demise lett and to farme lett unto JNO: NAYLOR and assigns one third part of a tenement formerly belonging to one JNO: BATTAN & who purchased the same of one LUKE WILLIAMS containing one hund:d & fifty acres of land more or less lying on and nigh the North side of RAPPAHANOCK RIVER and in the County of Richmd: which third part of the sd. tenement the sd: ELIZABETH claimes as her right of Dower as being the Widow & Relict of said JOHN BATTAN, Together with all houses orchards profitts with the appurtenances to the same belonging; To have and to hold the third part of the premisses to JNO: NAYLOR and assigns from the date abovesd: dureing the naturall life of the said ELIZABETH; paying therefore yearly the Rent of one ear of Indian Corne on the Feast day of the Birth of our Lord God if lawfully demanded; And WM. STOKES and ELIZTH: his Wife promise with JOHN NAYLOR & assigns that sd. JOHN NAYLOR or assigns shall at all time possess the one third part of the sd, tenement without any trouble of said WILLIAM and ELIZABETH STOKES or any person claiming under them; In Wittness whereof the parties to these presents interchangeably have sett their hands and seals the day & year first above written
