      Page 211. Lease. Sep 9, 1740 from Thomas Bowling & Mary, his wife, both of Charles County, planter, to Charles Robertson of PG, planter, the lease of 200 acres of land, being part of a tract of land called Strife, lying in PG, bounded by the last course of that part of sd Strife that was laid off for sd Thomas Bowling, it being by a main road at Mattawoman Branch, the dividing line between sd Thomas Bowling & James Green, containing and laid out for about 200 acres. This lease starts on Dec 25, 1737, and runs for the next 13 years. The yearly rent for the first 3 years is 8 shillings sterling for the quit rents, and after that, 700 lbs of merchantable tobacco to sd Thomas or Mary Bowlingg on the last day of Mar yearly.       We Joseph Routhorn and William Bowling of Charles County, Maryland, carpenters, for the consideration expressed and for divers other good causes and considerations them thereunto moving have sold to Thomas Bowling of PGCo, planter, all the right title interest and clam that we or either of us may have to five Negroes, Sarah, Nell, Ben, Poll and Priss now in the possession of William Bowling and made over to him by Joseph Routhorn for and during the natural life of Joseph Routhorn by deed bearing date January 17, 1749. And we the said Jospeh Routhorn and William Bowling do in like manner and for the same consideration make over sell and confirm to the said Thomas Bowling one other Negro girl called Sall, daughter of Nell. In consideration whereof Thomas Bowling doth bind and oblidge himself in the penal sum of 30,000 of tobacco to find and provide for the said Joseph Routhorn and Mary Routhorn his wife during their natural lives a warm room with a good fire place and closet and to keep the same furnished in a neat and handsome manner to find them a negro boy or girl to be constantly at their command, sufficient riding horses as required and meat, drink, washing and lodging sufficient and suitable to their character. Also the payment of 2000 pounds of crop tobacco annually to Joseph Routhorn during their lives and after his death 1000 pounds to Mary Routhorn annually.       Indenture made October 5, 1765; Thomas Bowling, carpenter and Mary Bowling his wife in consideration of 13,867 pounds of crop tobacco paid by Basil Smith of Charles County, Maryland and for divers other good causes and considerations them hereunto moving hath sold part of a tract called "Strife" containing 130 acres and sold by John Addison and William Hutchinson by deed bearing date May 1, 1701 to James Green and Thomas Frederick and on May 17, 1709 by the said Thomas Frederick by will gave the said part now conveyed to Mary Green the now wife of Thomas Bowling and on February 14, 1738, James Green by will gave the part now conveyed to Mary Bowling and beginning at a gum standing on the edge of the Main Run of Mattawoman and bounding on the main road that leads from Piscattaway to Portobacco.
