      Jeffries & Wife to Courtney Indenture
      This indenture made this 24th day of February 1801 between Edmund Rowland Jeffries of the Parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland, planter and Anne Harris Jeffries his wife of the one part and George Courtney of the aforesaid Parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland, blacksmith and planter of the other part. Witnesseth that Edmund Rowland Jeffries and Anne Harrison Jeffries his wife in consideration 82 pounds current money of Virginia in hand has sold to George Courtney a tract of land lying on the east side of the road going from Bloises Run to the mill of Richard Lee, Esq., deceased in the Parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland and bounded as followeth; beginning at a cedar post a corner of Mr. John Cox’s land, thence with the said Cox’s line North 61° West 22 3/10 poles to another cedar post a corner to George Courtney’s land, thence with the said Courtney’s line North 26° five minutes East 92 ½ poles to another cedar post in a line of the said George Courtney, from thence South 50 ½ degrees East 109 poles to a small pine in the line of the land of the late Vincent Rust, deceased, from thence along by a cedar post South 43 ½° West 90 2/10 poles to an oak at the road going from Bloises Run to Richard Lee’s Mill (which said line from the pine to the cedar post and from thence to the oak and the road was a division line made between Edmund Rowland Jeffries and his brother Jeremiah Jeffries by mutual consent), thence along the said road to the line of the land of Mr. John Cox, thence with Coxes line 17 7/10 poles to the beginning cedar post containing 50 acres. In witness whereof the said Edmund Rowland Jeffries and Anne Harrison Jeffries his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and date first above written.

      The Commonwealth of Virginia to William Forbes, Stephen Bailey and Richard Bennett, gentlemen. Whereas Edmund Rowland Jeffries and Anne Harrison Jeffries his wife have by their indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 24th day of February 18 01F sold and conveyed unto George Courtney 50 acres of land in whereas the said Nancy Harris Jeffries cannot conveniently travel to our court of the County of Westmoreland to make acknowledgment. Therefore, we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which she the said Nancy Harris Jeffries shall be willing to make. Witness Joseph Fox, Jr., clerk of our said County Court the 24th day of February 1801.
      Westmoreland Sct; agreeable to the above commission to us directed we have met and examined the said Nancy Harris Jeffries and that she did freely and voluntarily consent without force threats or persuasion to the same and consents the the same shall be recorded in our County Court. Given under our hands this 24th day of February 1801.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 22nd day of June 1801 the aforegoing deed of bargain and sale from Edmund Rowland Jeffries and Nancy Harris Jeffries his wife to George Courtney with a commission hereto annexed for the privy examination of the said Nancy Harris Jeffries return duly executed which deed was the day proved to the satisfaction of the court and ordered to be recorded.
