  • Notes
    • Dates can only be conjectured. A document records that young Giles entered the Stafford County Court to select his step-father, Francis Hammersley, as his guardian, which could be done no earlier than age 14 under the law of that time. His death is believed to have been in January or February, 1693-94*.

*Dates for this period are generally Old Style, as the new Gregorian calendar, which had been introduced to the Roman Catholic world in the 1580s, would not come into official use in the British empire until 1752. The two calendars were out of sync by about eleven days. The new Gregorian calendar marked the New Year on January 1, while the old Julian calendar marked the New Year on March 25. Colonial documents during this interval period would often hyphenate the year in the period between January and March, so that February 10 would be written as February 10, 1693-94.
