The undocumented, secondary source is "Captain George Athy (of Galway and Maryland) and his Descendants” Houston: Lawrence F. Athy, Jr., 1999, This book is frequently referred to by researchers of Atheys; however, primary sources do not uphold the book's records.. Checking the dates against probate records, the Capt. G. Athy book cannot be right about this particular matter.
Thomas Athey, son of John Athey and Margaret Lewis, was born Feb. 4, 1717, in Page County. He married Elizabeth Fenley about 1741. Elizabeth Fenley was born Mary 26, 1730 in St. John's Parish, Page Co, MD. Their children were Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary Fenley Athey.
Thomas Athey had a second marriage to Sarah Barker about 1747. They had a daughter named Lucy Athey. Sarah Barker was born Jan. 3, 1725 in St. John's Parish, Page Co, MD.
The will of Thomas Athey was probated March 25, 1761: To daughter Mary Athey, 80 acres, part of land where Daniel Hoskins now lives; To daughters Sarah and Lucy Athey, other part of land I now dwell on, to be equally divided between them My will is that remainder of estate be equally divided between daughters, Mary, Sarah and Lucy Athey. Another Thomas Athey, son of Thomas Athey, Sr.., was a cousin to the Thomas Athey who married Elizabeth Fenley and Sarah Barker. Thomas Athey, Sr. owned "Athey's Choice" which was located next to "The Ridge" owned by John Harris and next to "Nonsuch" which was granted to Charles Fenley, Sr. in 1720 and was, also, located next to land owned by Wm Webster. This land would have been roughly where Fort Washington Park is. Athey's Choice was surveyed in 1725 for Thomas ATHEY. so this could not have been the Thomas Athey b. 1717 who m. E. Fenley.
John Athey who m. Margaret Lewis was born about 1690. He was married June 4, 1711, in St. John's Parish, Page Co, MD. John Athey d. about 1729. The account of John Athey, planter, Prince George's Co, MD, Feb. 21, 1729, mentions next of kin Thomas Athey, George Athey, Adm/Extx Margret Athey (I&A 15.511) The inventory was appraised by John Harris and George Dixson.
John Athey's son, Thomas Athey b. Feb. 14, 1717, who m. Elizabeth Fenley was only about 6 years old at the time of his father's death. His brother, George Athey, b. Aug. 8, 1721, St. John's Parish, Page Co. was about 8 years old. This George Athey m. Anne McClash.
At a Vestry meeting at Broad Creek, Piscataway Parish, March 30, 1741, Thomas Athey was chosen as church warden, but he, along with Richard Lanham refused to take an oath to the government as required for church warden; however, on Feb. 30, 1748/49, "pews sold at the brick chappel", Piscataway Parish, listed Thomas Athey with pew 15 and Thomas Athey, Sr. with pew 10.
The Thomas Athey with pew 15 was the Athey who m. Eliz Fenley. Thomas Athey, Sr. with pew 10 would have been his uncle.
The land where St. John's Broad Creek Church is located was bought from Capt. George Athey who had named it "Little Hall".
