Thomas Ford married Jane Milstead in her father's home in Charles County, Maryland. The marriage must have taken place about 1724 as their first child, John Ford, was born in 1725. The young couple moved to Fairfax County, where Thomas applied for and received three separate land grants, all on Pope's Creek in Fairfax County. He lived and died there, although his law practice extended over several adjoining counties. The children of Thomas Ford followed the trend and moved on to new land on the frontier as soon as the danger from Indian raids subsided. Ketucky was a county of Virginia during the mid-18th century and several of Thomas and Jane's grandchildren and some cousins settled in Kentucky. The name of Thomas Ford is found on the list of privates, on duty during border skirmishes with the French and Indian enemies who sporadically alarmed the settlers from 1755 to 1762. Family tradition says that the Milsteads came from Wales originally, but no records to support this theory have been found. The Milstead family is found living in Charles County, Maryland on the Quit Rent Rolls from 1642 to 1725. The Trinity Parish Vestry Records, of Charles County, Maryland, shows the birth registry of a child, William Milstead, son of Edward and Susanna Milstead, born July 20 1685. Presumably it was this Edward Milstead who paid his Quit Rents on two plantation; one called "Good Luck If It Hits" and the other "Nonsuch". The eastern Virginia Milsteads moved west with the growing population, and most of their records are found in Amherst County, Virginia.
