Boykin: Boykin Tavern located next to the courthouse in IOW. The main part of the house built between 1780 and 1800 by Francis Boykin who bought a 400 acre plantation including a water grist and saw mill from his brother-in-law, Robert Marshall, in 1780. Francis Boykin married Anne Marshall, dau of John Marshall, a man of great wealth and large land holdings. Col. Boykin erected some of the court buildings at his own expense. A tavern was run in the Boykin house at one time. Francis Boykin died in 1803 and left place to son Francis Marshall Boykin. It remained in the family until 1831 when Willis H. Woodley bought it. There are many by this name in my books.
