      Note:
Mary Alexander, b. Nov. 26, 1756, was daughter of John and Lucy Thornton Alexander, granddaughter of Philip and Lucy Hooe Alexander, great-granddaughter of Philip and Sarah Ashton Alexander, great-great-grand-daughter of John Alexander, (son of William Alexander, of Menstrie, Scotland, first Earl of Stirling), who came to Stafford County, Va., in 1659, [see valuable papers by Alexander Brown and R. A. Brock, in Richmond Slandard, Vol. III, Nos. 2, 6, 7, 36, 37, 44, 51; Vol. I, No. 39; Vol. II, Nos. 47, 49.] After her husband's death she married Gen. Thomas Posey, and removed to Kentucky. The following curious document tells the story of the death of Maj. Thornton, the father of the subject of this sketch:

CERTIFICATE OF MRS. MARY POSEY, relative to the death of Major George Thornton, late of the Virginia line of Continental Troops, and the supposed right of his heirs to pay from the Government of the United States.

State of Kentucky, Henderson County, Jan'y 30th, 1834. I DO HEREBY CERTIFY that I was born, 26th day of Nov. in the year A. D. 1756, in Stafford County, Virginia, that my maiden name was Mary Alexander, that I was married to George Thornton on the 9th day of October, 1773, by the Rev. Wm. Stewart in Stafford County, St. Paul's Parish, Virginia, that my husband George Thornton was first a Militia Officer in the year (???): as such he was at the bombardment of Marlboro, the seat of Judge Mercer, on the Potomac, that again, being in the Legislature of Virginia, he was sent out against Lord Dunmore, that he returned home, and shortly afterwards, on the (???) day of (???) in the year (???), was commissioned a Major in the Virginia line on Continental Establishment, in the Revolutionary war that with this rank he fought under Gen'l Woodford at the battle of Governor's Island, mouth of the Piankatank, in the Chesapeake Bay; that afterwards he was marching with a detachment of his Regiment, when after a very hard day's march, he imprudently took a very large draught of very cold water, which was supposed to be the cause of his death, which occurred on the 30th day of April in the year 1781, on his way to Williamsburg.

That by my husband, Major George Thornton, I had two sons George W., and Reuben, and a daughter, Lucy Frances, that George W. and Reuben, though now dead, left children; that Lucy F., who is still living, married with Capt. John Posey, by whom she has six children living; that they are the only heirs of the late Major George Thornton. That from laws of Congress, and the usage of the United States Government, I believe the above heirs are entitled to $(???) from the Government. That I nor they never received any part thereof in any way whatever. I think it nothing but justice that they, the said heirs, should be paid. That as afterwards, on the (???) day of(???), A. D. (???), I married Gen'l Thomas Posey, which act, although it may deprive me of any part or share of the sum due from the Government, I believe my children by my late husband, Maj. George Thornton, are justly entitled to it: and further believe the Government of the United States ought and will pay them."

      THORNTON AND POSEY BIBLE RECORD
[Newspaper clipping] Death. After a short illness of thirty-six hours, on the 18th of May, 1837, at the residence of Captain John Posey, Henderson county, Kentucky, Mrs. Mary Posey, widow and relict of the late General Thomas Posey, an early and distinguished patriot of the Revolution. She was the eldest daughter of Mr. John Alexander, who was once the proprietor of the ground on Which the city of Alexandria now stands, and from whom it derives its name; was born in Stafford county, Virginia,
at that beautiful seat on the Potomac, known by the name of Salisbury. At an early age, she married
Major George Thornton, of Fredericksburg, a very active and zealous partisan officer in the revolutionary war, (who sacrificed his life in the service of his country, at an early period of her struggle for independence,)-- by whom she had six children. After remaining a widow about three years, she intermarried with General Thomas Posey, and by him had eleven children, the most of whom are still living. ...
