      1680 Stafford County, Virginia Order Book [Antient Press];
      p. 8(15) The Depo. of EDWARD KENDRICKE aged about thirty and five years or there-abouts sworne and examined ye eleaventh day of Augst. 1680, saith that about ye last day of June Mr. JAMES CLIFTON came to his House and asked your Deponent where was ye Tobo: and your Deponent answer was to him if hee meant BRENTs Tobo hee had orders from Mr. BRENT not to deliver any Tobo: to him, BURDITT or ye Sea-men, the above said Mr. CLIFTONs answer was to your Deponent that if Mr. BRENT was there au his House himselfe hee would have ye Tobo: that afternoone and ye next day ye said CLIFTON tooke away four hhds. ye Tobo: seeming not to take any notice of Mr. BRENTs special order to ye (?) but Mr. BURDETT (your Depont. saith) did upon said orders of Mt. BRENT declare he would not upon any termes meddle with said Tobo: nor did he in ye least: But said CLIFTON did with several threats and commands force ye Seamen to rowle said Tobo: away and assisted himselfe in roweling of ye same and further your Depont. saith not. EDWARD KENDRICKE Jur. in Cur. et Recordat: the 7th die

      MRS. WEST being interrogated by Mr. BRENT sayes. How long after ye Tobo: was last marked was itt taken away; to which she sayes about six weeks or two months; How many hhds. were there; shee says three. Did you receive any orders from Mr. BRENT not to deliver. 3rd. Shee saith shee hath answered that in her former deposition and that Mr. HICKS did forewarne her.

      Recordatr: 11 August 1680. (Mr. JAMES CLIFTON vs. Mr. GEO: BRENT) Interrogatories putt to SARAH WEST on ye behaife of ye said CLIFTON. Wheather any (marked out) ye Tobo. markes marked & received for Mr. BRENT in or about March last, shee answered 1st, that shee cannot tell what month or time butt itt was received upon Mr. BRENTs accompts ye first tyme.
      And wheather or not a man came from him and searched ye said marke out and putt itt into Mr. MATTHEWS marke, shee answers 2nd. yeas.
      Wheather or not did you say to ye man that if Mr. MATHEWS knew you marked (?) that time or ye yeare which was formerly marked by him hee would give you noe thanks for your (light) or words to that effect and that was his answer; she knows nothing (too light) SARAH WEST her mrke. Recordatr: 11 die Augst. 1680

      SARAH WEST aged Thirty six years or thereabout sworne and examined saith that about three weeks or a month agoe Mr. CHARLES HICKS came to mee and forewarned mee for letting Mr. BRENTs Tobo: goe unto CLIFTON by his Order, and ye next day after ye said Mr. CLIFTON came unto mee and another Gentleman along with him, whome I tooke to bee a man that belonged to ye Shipp, and tould mee that hee came for ye said Tobo: and shewed me Mr. BRENTs Order, as hee tould mee itt vas but I tould him that Mr. HICKS had lately forewarned mee but ye said Mr. CLIFTON and other Gentleman took itt and with all tould mee hee would bears mee out in itt, and further saith not

      Clifton & Green Hambleton Affidavit
      The Deposition of William Hambleton aged 33 years or there
      abouts Sworn and Examined before Henry Coursey Esq Saith that
      in the year 1657 or thereabouts the deponant lived at Capt. Giles
      Brents in potomack River dureing the time of Nine or Ten Months
      or thereabouts to the best of your deponants knowledge and during
      the time of your deponants abode there there lived one William
      Green a Carpenter and his wife which Green did hire himself to
      Capt Brent some certain time how long your deponant knoweth not
      but presently before he was hired to Capt Brent or presently after
      the said Greene lived at a house of his own near unto Capt Brent
      upon a peice of Land which Capt Brent had either lett him or sold
      him it happened so that to the best of your deponants knowledge
      that the said William Greene did kill a Barrow Hogg belonging to
      Capt. Giles Brent as he himself did confess to the best of your
      deponants knowledge and so it was that a small time after he had
      killed the Hogg the said Green came to Capt Brent and desired him
      not to trouble him and he would make him honest payment for the
      Hogg this discourse your Deponant did not at that time hear but
      your deponant to the best of his knowledge did hear the
      agreement Capt Brent and William Green
      your deponant well remember this is true to the best of
      your De knowledge and remembrance and further saith
      not W.m Hamble

      There being some Controversy between James Clifton of Stafford
      County in the Collony of Virginia Gent, and William Greene to
      which the said Affidavit had relation The Honble the Chancellor
      did at the request of the said M.r Clifton cause the Tenour of the
      Record of the said affidavit to be made known under his hand &
      the lesser Seal of this province thereto affixed the 4.th day of January in the 38th of Caecilius 1669
