Will of William THORNTON
In the Name of God Amen. I William THORNTON of King George County and Parish of Brunswick, Gentleman, being sick and weak in body but of sound perfect and disposing mind memory and understanding.
Praised be Almighty God for the same, do make and declare this my Last Will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator and by the Merits of his son Jesus Christ my Redeemer I hope for the Enjoyments of a Heavenly Being.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Frances ROBINSON my granddaughter the following slaves, Punch, Venus and her child Lucy, Hannah, Primus, Cato Mingo, Jack and Dafeny. I also give unto my said granddaughter all that tract or parcel of land in Prince William County at the Great Marsh whereon William Hackney and John Jones now live containing five hundred acres of land more or less.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandson William ROBINSON THE following slaves Dick, Winney, Milley, Jolly, Dick, Edinborough, Plato, Phill and Sambo. I also give unto my said grandson William Robinson fifteen hundred acres of land in Prince William County, Virginia, the uppermost part of my land binding upon Tin Pot Run.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving brother Francis THORNTON of Caroline County One Hundred Pounds Current Money.
Item: At the day of my death I do acquit and discharge my loving friend John Steward from all debts, dues and demands.
Item: Give unto Anne Redman the sum of Thirty Five Pounds Current Money to be paid in provisions on this plantation or money as the said Anne Redman shall like best.
Item: I give unto my kind friend the Reverend Mr. Daniel McDonald a book called Usebuss History of the Church. As I apprehend there is no occasion of appraising my estate, I desire it may be omitted. All the rest and residue of my estate I give unto my dearly beloved wife Frances ROBINSON and my only son William ROBINSON
in due proportions as the law shall direct.
Lastly I do appoint my loving brother Francis Thornton and my only son William THORNTON EXECUTORS OF THIS MY Last Will and Testament heretofore by me made. Parrish of Sittenburn and County of Richmond, (which SUSANAH was the only Daughter of WILLIAM SMITH, Cordwainer, of County of Richmond) of one part and MARMADUKE BECKWITH of Parrish of Northfarnham and County of Richmond of other part; Witnesseth that THOMAS THORNTON and SUSANAH his Wife in consideracon of the sum of three thousand pounds of good sound merchantable tobacco in cask to them in hand paid by MARMADUKE BECKWITH, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, hath and by these presents doe bargain sell and release unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH in his actuall possession now being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him thereof made for one year and by force of the Statute for transferring uses into possession, and to his heirs all that parcell of land containing by estimacon One hundred acres (be the same more or less) scituate in Parish of Sittenburn and County of Richmond and bounded; Beginning the bounds of the land repeated as in the Lease as well as the passing of the Land); To have and to hold the tract of land and premises with appurtenances unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH his heirs free and clear from all encumbrances (the Cheife rent of the Lord of the fee due from the time of the sale only excepted); In Witness vherof THOMAS THORNTON and SUSANAH his Wife have hereunto sett their hands and seals the day and year first above written

KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I THOMAS THORNTON of Parrish of Sittenburn and County of Richmond, Planter, am held and firmly bound unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH of the Parrish of Northfarnham and County of Richmond in the full and just sum of Three thousand pounds of good sound merchantable tobacco in cask, to the which payment well and truely to be made I bind my selfe my heirs firmly by these presents; Sealed with my seal dated the Seventh day of December 1726
THE CONDICON of the above written Obligacon is such that if the above bounden THOMAS THORNTON his heirs shall performe and keep all the Covenants which on his and their parts ought to be performed and kept mentioned in certain Indentures of Bargain and Sale by way of Lease and Release made between THOMAS THORNTON and MARMA-

THIS INDENTURE made the fifth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred twenty & six Between THOMAS THORNTON of SITTENBURN PARISH in County of RICHMOND and Colony of Virginia of one part and WILLIAM HODGKINSON of NORTH FARNHAM Parish and County aforesaid and Colony of Virginia of other part; Witnesseth that THOMAS THORNTON in consideracon of the sum of Two thousand pounds of tobacco to him in hand paid by WM.. HODGKINSON. the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto WILLIAM HODGKINSON (in his actuall possession now being of the tract of land with the appurtenances herein after mentioned by virtue of one Indenture of Bargain and Sale to him of it made for one whole year and of the Statute for transferring uses into possession and to his heirs all that parcell of land containing by estimation one hundred acres of land situate in Westmoreland County and bounded, Beginning at a corner tree dividing t! he said land from the land of GEORGE BROWN. deced., where he did live and now his Widow. ROSE BROWN. Liveth, thence to a Branch issueing out of the Swamp called and known by the name of PANTICO. dividing this land from a small peice given to MARK THORNTON, Grandson to LUKE THORNTON, deced., and by LUKE THORNTON deced., given both by Will and Deed, thence aloing the said Branch to the Swamp called PANTICO. thence along the Swamp to a line of THOMAS FRANKLIN, deced., and from thence along a line of JOHN LOYDEs. deced., being a quarter called and known by the name of PANTICO QUARTER to the place where it first began. the which Land and premises was given to THOMAS THORNTON and his heirs by LUKE THORNTON, deced., his Father both by Will and Deed of Gift as Recorded in RICHMOND County, and all the Houses. Orchards, trees likely to become Timber, profitts and appurtenances to the parcell of land belonging. and the Estate right title and demand of THOMAS THORNTON as well in equity as at Law of THOMAS THORNTON in and to all the same so far forth as was given to him by the Will and Deed of Gift by his Father, deced., To have and to hold the parcell of land all all other the appurtenances unto WILLIAM HODGKINSON his heirs free and clear from all incumbrances.
