      THE WILL OF THOMAS SCOTT, OF CAROLINE
      In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Scott of the County of Caroline and St. Margaret's Parish being in good health and perfect and sound mind and memory and calling to mind the certainty of death, do make and ordain this last will and Testament in and forever following:
      Item. I give to my son Rice Scott the tract of land, whereon he now lives lying in Prince Edward County containing by estimation one thousand acres to him and his heirs forever. Likewise six Negro slaves, vizt. one man named Crupper, one yellow man named Glesgow, one man named Dick, one boy named John, one boy named Shepherd and one woman named Dol and her in future increase, and all the stock and household goods which he has unready received and hath now in possession to him and his heirs or assignees forever.
      Item. I give to my son John Scott Seventy Pounds current money of Virginia which is to pay the- ballance now due for the land whereon he now lives, laying in the County of Amherst, which money is to be raised out of my estate after my death and payed to my son John Scott his heirs or assignees if I do not advance it to him before. Likewise the six negroes following vizt. one man named Admiral, one man named Harry, one woman named Mol, one woman named Black Lucy, one girl named Zenas, and one girl named Bett with all their future increase. Likewise all the stock and household goods which he has already received and hath in his possession to him and his heirs or assignees forever. It is my will and desire that unless my son John return to me before my death immediately after to my son William on being informed of this clause of my will, a negro girl named Charlotte which I lend to my son John and had given her before to my son William in presence of John Wiley, Jun. (unless the girl depart this life before me) then my son William shall receive of my estate the seventy pounds which is herein mentioned and bequeathed to my son John to enable him to pay for his land. Likewise the two negroes which I herein bequeath to my son John, which are as follows one man named Harry, and one woman named Mol, which said sum of Seventy Pounds shall be to my son William, his heirs or assignees forever in lieu of the said negro girl named Charlotte now in Possession of my son John Scott, provided she is not returned according to this my last will and desire.
      Item. I give to my son [Rice] ? [name is omitted in Mr. S.'s copy] six negro slaves hereafter mentioned vizt. one named Caroline, one man named Pristoe, one woman named Patt, one boy named Harry, one woman named Gill, and a girl named Nance and their increase. Likewise six head of catttle and all the household goods and furniture he has received of me and now hath in his possession to him his heirs or assignees forever.
      [Here is writing in the will which was partly erased by drawing a pen across the paper. Here it is :]
      As I have all ready to my said son Thomas Scott advanced ye sum of 300 pounds I cannot give him any land and my desire is that nothing of my estate but what I have already given him. [That is about what was written and then was erased.]
      Item. I give my son James Scott, the tract of land whereon he now lives, which I purchased of John Bagbee laying in Prince Edward County, containing by estimation 400 acres To him and his heirs or assignees forever. Likewise 6 negroes vizt. hereafter mentioned. Boy named James, a man named David, a woman named Daphney, and another named Phillis, a man named John, a woman named Hannah.
      Item. I give to my son Samuel Scott negroes hereafter mentioned. Vizt. one boy named Hunter, one woman named Sendry, man called black Glasgow, a boy named Dan, girl named Jane and a woman named Tenor and their future increase to him and his heirs or assignees forever.
      Item. I give William Scott 6 negro slaves hereafter mentioned. Vizt. one boy named Lewis, one negro girl named Selah, one woman named Ester, one negro boy named Martin, one negro woman named Judah„ and one named Charlotte and their future increase to him and his heirs or assignees forever.
      Whereas the last mentioned girl Charlotte is now in the possession of my son John Scott as before mentioned. If he refuse to give her up before my death, or after to my son William Scott having notice of this my will, I will and bequeath to my said son William the seventy pounds which I have before desired to be raised out of my estate for my son John and likewise 2 of ye negroes which I have before given to my son John shall be to my son William and his heirs or assignees forever.
      Item. I give to my daughter Frances Gatewood 4 negro slaves next hereafter mentioned, Vizt. a negro woman Clobine, a negro woman named Cloe, a woman named Jane, a woman named Clio and all their increase, now in possession of my said daughter, during her natural life for her sole and separate use and not to be her husband's, and after her death to heirs of her body lawfully begotten and to them and their heirs or assignees forever. Likewise the stock and household goods which she hath already received of me and now hath in possession, also 6 head of cattle I wish delivered to her out of my stock after my decease.
      Item. I give to my Granddaughter Martha Gatewood, one negro woman named Sarah and her future increase to her and her heirs or assignees forever.
      My will and desire is that the land whereon I now live and all I shall be possessed with at my death (except the land I have given away in this my last will) shall be sold and the money arising from the sale of ye land, shall be equaly divided among my three sons hereafter mentioned vizt. Samuel Scott, William Scott and Robert Scott to be by them or their guardian layed out in purchasing other lands as they shall choose for them, -their heirs and assignees forever.
      It is my will that if either of my four (4) sons hereafter mentioned, vizt. James Scott, Samuel Scott, William Scott and Roberst Scott dye without lawful issue of their Bodies, then all the Estate I have given and bequeathed to them shall be equally divided between the survivors of them which shall be to them and their heirs or assignees forever.
      Item. I give to my four Sons hereafter mentioned vizt. James Scott, Samuel Scott, William Scott and Robert Scott (after my just debts being payed) all the residue of my Estate, be it of what nature or kind so ever, to be equally divided among them or their heirs, which shall be to them, their heirs or assignees forever. My will and desire is that if I should depart this life when there is a crop upon hand that the negroes shall remain on the plantation till ye first of January following to finish the crop.
      Item. I give to my two sons William Scott and Robert Scott three negroes vizt. one named Sirus, one named Samson and one named Jenas to them and their heirs or assignees forever. I have given these three negroes to my sons William and Robert in consideration of my lending to my well beloved wife during her natural life two negroes vizt. Lewe and Peg which I have herein before willed to my sons William Scott and Robert Scott.
      Item. I lend my well-beloved wife Martha Scott during her natural life two negro slaves one named Lewe and one named Peg. Likewise my riding chair and double harness and two horses and mares which in common drove in ye chair. At the time of my death, which I desire she peaceably and quietly possess and enjoy during her natural life. It is likewise my will and desire that my well-beloved wife Martha Scott shall have the liberty to live where I now live with whichever of my sons live at the place until she thinks (or offers to move or till they sell the land, to some other person) without being molested and forced to move.
      Item. I last constitute and appoint Capt. Samuel Haws, John B. Roy, George Yates, my sons Rice Scott and James Scott, Executors of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of November one thousand seven hundred and seventy two.

      N. B. or to this my will is added, as James Gatewood brought suit against me since I have this will wrote, it is my desire that should he recover more than is herein bequeathed to my daughter Frances, which he married, that all I have herein given her and likewise what I have given my Granddaughter Martha Gatewood and my account for sundry articles delivered to my said daughter and her husband James Gatewood shall be discounted out of the sum he receive by ye said suit if it amount to more than I have given him.
