For many years, I believed that Rebecca Martin, who married William George (b. Abt. 1699; d. Bef. 16 May 1760), was the daughter of Thomas Martin and Rebecca Horton. That was until I read the following abstract of a court document (brackets are by a third party, Vera Wimberly):
"Lancaster Co. VA Order Book 7, p. 90, dated 10 Apr 1723 [abstracted by M. W. Hardy] 'William GEORGE Jr. Complt and Henry Fleet and John Cook defts for one fourth part of the Estate of Thos. Martin dec'd belonging to Rebecca the wife of ye complt who was one of ye Daughters of ye sd Thos. Martin In which accrws [?] due from ye defts by reason of the aforesaid becoming [mature somehow - did not get it read].
"Relict of sd Thomas Martin and now wife of one John Johnson her true __?__ adm ect last Feb. John Johnson & Susanna his wife __?__ [very difficult to read]."
Clearly, this document indicates that William George's wife's, Rebecca Martin's, mother is Susanna _____ (and not Rebecca Horton), who was the relict of Thomas Martin and subsequently married John Johnson. I am currently showing Rebecca Martin as the daughter of Thomas Martin and Susanna _____; with Thomas Martin being the SON of Thomas Martin and Rebecca Horton.
Sincerely,
Jim Danley
