      1775-1803 British Mercantile Claims
Capt. Robert Chew , Spotsylvania. £7.14.11 due Robt. Jardine; £214.2.4 due McCall Smellie & Co. ; £118.17.4 due G. McCall & Co.; £15.3.9-1/2 due James Ritchie & Co. He died in Spotsylvania County about the close of the war. His executor is his son John Chew, now of Fredericksburg. He left a valuable tract of land and personal estate of but small value. Suit has been brought in Spotsylvania County against the executor of Robert Chew for the debt of McCall, Smellie & Company and upon a plea of fully administered the jury found for the defendant. The personal estate of Robert Chew was absorbed by debts of superior dignity to any of these. The land left by Robert Chew and now in the possession of John Chew would have been sufficient to discharge these debts if it had been liable to the payment of them but neither by the general laws of this state were lands liable for payment of debts nor could the creditor in any of these claims recover against the heir inasmuch as he was not bound by the obligation of his ancestor.
