SOME LINEAL DESCENDANTS OF
CAPTAIN ADAM THOROWGOOD (1602-1640)
LYNNHAVEN PARISH, PRINCESS ANNE COUNTY, VIRGINIA
By Mrs. Phyllis W. Francis
Williamsburg, James City County, Virginia
Captain Adam Thorowgood, born in England, was baptized in 1603 at St. Botolph's, the parish church of Grimstead, Norfolk, England, where his father had been appointed vicar in 1581. He was one of the younger sons of William Thorowgood of Grimston and Anne, daughter of Henry Edwards, of Norwich, England. He came to Virginia in 1621 in the Charles, age 18, and in 1624-25, at the time of the first census, was listed in the muster of Mr. Edward Waters, Elizabeth Citie.
On 30 Dec. 1626 Adam Thorowgood purchased of John Gundry 150 acres of land at Kicotan in Elizabeth Citie County on the north side of Hampton Roads. He returned to England and on 18 July 1627 he was married at St. Benet's Church, London, to Sarah Offley, daughter of Robert Offley, merchant of London, who was also a member of the Virginia Company, and his wife Ann Osborne.
Shortly after their marriage they returned to Elizabeth City Co., Va.

Adam's will was probated in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, April 27, 1640. Adam Thorowgood came to Virginia on the "Charles" in 1621. He was at Elizabeth City for the 1623-4 census and is shown aged 18 for the 1624-5 census, a servant in the muster of Edward Waters. By 1626, he is known as Captain Adam Thorogood, Gentleman of Kiquotan, when he purchased 150 acres on the north side of Hampton Roads. He patented 400 acres in Elizabeth City County on March 21, 1634-5 and 5,350 acres at Lynnhaven, Lower Norfolk County in 1637. This land at Lynnhaven on the south side of Hampton Roads was due him for the personal adventure of himself and his wife and the transportation of 105 persons between 1628 and 1634

The records also mentions Cyprian THOROUGHGOOD. In "Cavaliers and Pioneers", vol. 1 by NUGENT, there is a land patent to Adam THOROUGHGOOD in 1635. In the patent, It names the ship "John & Dorothy" of which both Thomas and John PAYNE were involved, as being one of the ships in his convoy transporting him to Virginia. Aboard the ship, among many others, were John WITHERS- servant of John PAYNE and John REYNOLDS who is named in the will of Thomas PAINE of St. Mary's County, Maryland Remember too that Nicholas PAYNE was a crew member aboard the DOVE under the CALVERTS, who owned the ship. Also aboard was Samuel LAWSON.
Continuing from the book
"Then was the house moved by the attorney to inquire of the death of William Ashmore, Ratcliff WARREN, John Bellson, and William DAWSON, and the house having heard the evidence of Cyprian THOROUGHGOOD, John Nevill, Cuthbert Fennick, and Edward FLEETE did find that the said Ratcliff WARREN, John Bellson, and William DAWSON, with divers others, did assault the vessel of captain Cornwaleys and his company, feloniously and as pirates and robbers to take the said vessel, and did discharge divers pieces charged with bullett and shott against the said Thomas Cornwaleys and his company, whereupon and after such assault made, the said Thomas Cornwaleys and his company in defence of themselves and safeguard of their lives, not being able to fly further from them, after warning given to the assailants to desist from assaulting them at their own peril, did discharge some guns upon the said Ratcliff (WARREN) and his company, of which shots the said Ratcliff WARREN, John Bellson, and William DAWSON died, and so they find that the said Thomas Cornwaleys and his company did lawfully, and in their own necessary defence kill the said Ratcliff WARREN, John Bellson, and William DAWSON, and do acquit the said Thomas Cornwaleys and his company of the death of the said Ratcliff WARREN, John Bellson, and William DAWSON."
