THIS INDENTURE made this 7th day of December in year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven Between HENRY GAINES and ANN his Wife of County of Culpeper of one part and PHILIP SLAUGHTER of the same County of other part; Witnesseth that HENRY GAINES and ANN his Wife for the full and just sum of Five hundred and fifty pounds current money of Virginia in hand paid by PHILIP SLAUGHTER. by these presents doth bargain sell and confirm unto PHILIP SLAUGHTER his heirs one certain tract of land lying on the ROBINSON RIVER in Culpeper County whereon said HENRY GAINES now lives containing by estimation Three hundred and fifty four acres more or less and is bounded, Begining at a Beach and white Oak Stump on North side of ROBINSON RIVER on the bank of said River. corner to JAMES GREENs SENR. deceased, and runing thence with that line North fifty one degrees East twenty seven poles to a black Stump in a Slash, thence with the same line North thirty three degrees East sixty one poles to a Stone in an Old Field, corner with said GREENs (deced.) line and runing thence South seventy one degrees East eighty two poles to a red Oak in the Old Lou. Line, another corner of GAINES's land, and with said GAINES's line North thirty degrees West forty poles to a Pine, corner with said GREENs and REUBEN GARNETT, and runing thence with GARNETTs line South forty nine degrees East eighty one poles to a white Oak on CEDAR RUN, corner to said GARNETT, thence up the meanders of said Run one hundred and seventy eight poles to three white Oaks on East side of said Run, corner to said GARNETT and JOHN WAUGH, thence with WAUGHs line South twenty eight degrees East flinty poles to a box Oak and two Pines, corner to JOHN WAUGH and TALIAFERRO, thence with TALIAFERRO's line South thirty six degrees West one hundred and fifty six poles to three small black Oak saplins in the Old Line, thence with said Lott Line South thirty three degrees East one hundred and seventeen poles to a single Pine, corner to TALIAFERRO, thence with TALIAFERRO's line South thirty degrees West one hundred and eight poles to two small Persimmon trees on the bank of ROBINSON RIVER thence up the several meanders of the River binding on Low Water Mark (blank) to the Begining; together with all houses orchards profits and appurtenances to the same belonging, and all rents issue and profits thereof: To have and to hold the tract of land and all premises with the appurtenances unto PHILIP SLAUGHTER his heirs, And HENRY GAINES and ANN his Wife for themselves and their heirs the land and premises unto PHILIP SLAUGHTER his heirs will warrant and forever defend against said HENRY GAINES and ANN his Wife their heirs or any other person lawfully claiming any right to the same; In Witness whereof said HENRY GAINES and (blank) his Wife have hereunto set their hands & Seals the month & year first above written

The Commonwealth of Virginia to SAMUEL CLAYTON, HENRY HILL and JOHN WAUGH Gentlemen, Greeting; Whereas HENRY GAINES and ANN his Wife by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 7th day of December 1787 have sold and conveyed unto PHILIP SLAUGHTER the fee simple Estate of Three hundred & fifty four acres of land more or less lying in County of Culpeper And Whereas the said ANN cannot conveniently travel to our said County Court to make acknowledgment of the same (the Commission for the privy Examination of ANN, the Wife of HENRY GAINES); Witness JOHN JAME-SON Clerk of our said Court at the Courthouse aforesaid the 7th day of December 1787 and in the 12th year of the Commonwealth JOHN JAMESON

In Obedience to the within Commission to us directed, we the Subscribers did personally go to said ANN and did then and there examine her privily and apart from the said HENRY her Husband (the return of the execution of the privy examination of ANN GAINES); Given under our hands & seals this 7th day of December 1787
