The death of his parents in October and November of 1847 cut his education short, and he returned home and inherited a third of his father’s estate at Leesylvania. John would later acquire the properties of “Bellegrove” in Leesburg and “Oak Hill”, which was the estate of President James Monroe in Loudoun County. According to the 1860 census, John was worth $105,000.
