THIS INDENTURE made the Twenty Second day of August 1777 Between GEORGE THORNTON and MARY his Wife of the County of SPOTSYLVANIA of one part and THOMAS HALL of County of Culpeper Witnesseth that George Thornton and Mary his Wife for sum One hundred pounds Virginia money have granted unto the said Thomas Halt his heirs land in County of Culpeper & Bromfield Parish between the Hazel River and Hughs.s Rivers containing Two hundred acres land is bounded Begining at a white oak on Hughes River thence North to two white oaks on the South side of the MAIN ROAD thence up the said Road South thence West to a red oak on a Knowl thence South to a Spanish Oak on a stony Knowl near said River formerly a Corner to DUFF and STONEHOUSE thence down the diferent courses of the said river to the Begining . . .

The Commonwealth of Virginia to JOHN STROTHER and JOHN SLAUGHTER Gent Whereas George Thornton and Mary his Wife have sold land in the County of Culpeper unto Thomas Hall and Whereas the said Mary cannot travel to our said County Court to make acknowledgement of the said Conveyance we do give unto you power to personally go to the said Mary and examine her apart from her husband whether she doth the same freely and when you have received her acknowledgement that you Certifie us thereof in our County Court. Witness JOHN JAMESON Clk of our said Court at the Courthouse the 22nd of August 1778 and the third year of the Commonwealth.
Culpeper SCT In Obedience to the within Commission we did go to the said Mary Thornton and she did freely acknowledge the same. Given this 22nd day August 1778.
