Jun 23, 1783 from Henrietta Speake and Lawson Speake, to Francis Speake, all of CC. Whereas Richd Speake of CC, decd, owned sundry lands in CC, and, by his will dated Sep 14, 1776, devised as to his landed estate as follows: "I give to my brother, Francis Speake, all my land lying above the Reedy Run on the north side of the main road leading from Chickamuxon to Mattawoman; secondly, I give to my wife, Henrietta Speake, the use of all my other lands during her natural life, and after her death, I give sd lands to my nephew, Lawson Speake, and if sd Lawson dies without issue, the afd lands to be equally divided between my brother Hezekiah's 2 sons (Viz) Joseph and Francis, and if they die without issue, then the lands to be divided between my 3 brothers, William, Joseph, and Francis". And whereas sd Henrietta Speake and Lawson Speake are certainly convinced that the sd Richard Speake meant that sd Francis Speake should hold and enjoy the land devised to him in fee simple, and therefore that they have no right or title to the same, and wanting to carry into effect the intent of the will and to avoid the possibility of dispute and litigation, and for 5 shillings to them paid by sd Francis Speake, they, Henrietta Speake and Lawson Speake, release and confirm to sd Frans Speake, all the lands, late of the Richd Speake lying above the Reedy Run on the north side of the main road leading from Chickamuxon to Mattawoman. Signed - Henrietta Speake, Lawson Speake. Wit - Warren Dent, Rich Barnes. Recorded Jul 28, 1783.
