Comment: Jerusalem Town (now Funkstown) was in Frederick Co., Md. until 1776 when it became part of the new Washington Co., Md.

Nov. 1771 - Frederick Co., Md. Court. George DeMane [sic] is appointed Constable for the ensuing year for the Upper part of Antieatam Hundred.

Sep. 1775 - George Dement was appointed by the Committee of Observation to carry the Association of Freemen to male residents in Upper Antietam Hundred on September 14, 1775 "and require their subscription to the same and make an exact account of those who sign and those that refuse with their reasons for refusing."

Comment: This record shows that George Dement had moved to Ohio Co., Va., by Sep. 1778; no later records of him are found in Maryland. For the Ohio Co., Va. records of George Dement, see Holmes, Marilyn, "Dements Through the Ages," Vol. 1, Page 98-108. These records show (among other things) that:
--George m. his 2nd wife Jocasta Wealaxton on Aug. 9, 1794 in Ohio Co., Va.
--George died intestate in April 1798 at West Liberty, Ohio Co., Va.
--George is buried in the Dement Cemetery on the Benajah Dement farm near Wheeling.
--George's estate was administered by his widow Jocasta and eldest son William Dement. (letters of administration granted them by the Ohio Co., Va. Court on May 7, 1798.)
--Jocasta m. Ignatius Simms on Aug. 13, 1801 in Ohio Co., Va.
--George had 9 children, all by his 1st wife Sarah Gordon.
Jan. 12, 1780 - Benajah Dement, of Ohio Co., Va., farmer, appoints my trusted friend, Charles Howard, farmer, in Baltimore Co., Md., my lawful attorney and in my name to make over and deliver unto Samuel Mummy of Baltimore Co., Md., blacksmith, a certain tract of land known by the name of "Dements Enlargement" containing and laid out for 347 acres, it laying and being in Charles Co., Md., and likewise a small tract of land [not named] containing 13 acres with a mill set on it laying at the Beaver Dams on Piles Creek laying in the county aforesaid. I have received at the time of sealing and delivering this power of attorney of the aforesaid Samuel Mummy the sum of 6,000 pounds continental currency, the receipt of which I acknowledge and myself therewith fully and entirely contented and satisfied. Signed by Benajah Dement in Ohio Co., Va. Witnesses Caleb Owings, [brother] George Dement.
